Today’s Story: “How Could a Bear Sleep Here?”

Today, we’re going to read a fun story called “How Could a Bear Sleep Here?” written by Julie Gonzalez and illustrated by Stephanie Labarris. Let’s find out how a bear finds a place to sleep!

The Sleepy Bear Adventure

Once upon a time, there was a bear named Shelby. It was time for Shelby to hibernate, which means to sleep for a long time. But Shelby had a problem. He couldn’t find a quiet place to sleep!

First, Shelby found a cave that was deep, dark, and peaceful. But there were noisy squirrels and birds everywhere! “How could a bear sleep here?” Shelby wondered.

Finding the Perfect Spot

Shelby tried sleeping by the rocks, but they were too pokey! Ouch! Then, he tried under the boardwalk, but it was too noisy! Rattle, rattle, rattle! Shelby even tried the pier, but it was too loud there too! “Oh, how could a bear sleep here?” he thought.

Finally, Shelby found a cozy spot between some tall grasses. It was quiet, and he could smell the salty air. He snuggled up and started to dream. But then, the waves crashed, and the flies buzzed. “Oh, how could a bear sleep here?”

A Stormy Surprise

Shelby tried again, digging into the warm sand like a blanket. He was just about to sleep when—boom, boom, boom! A big storm with lightning came! Shelby had never seen anything like it. “Oh, how could a bear sleep here?”

He covered his ears and tried to sleep again. But when the sun came up, he saw a little cub in trouble. Shelby was a strong swimmer and helped the cub. What a hero!

Home Sweet Home

After all the excitement, Shelby knew he couldn’t sleep there. But he found his way back home, where there were crunchy squirrels and chattering birds. Finally, Shelby could rest all winter long. “Oh, a bear surely could sleep here!”

Doesn’t that sound cozy? I hope you enjoyed the story about Shelby the bear. Remember to read lots of books and have fun adventures of your own!

  1. Build a Cozy Bear Den: Gather some pillows, blankets, and cushions to create a cozy bear den in your classroom or at home. Pretend to be Shelby the bear and find the perfect spot to hibernate. Think about what makes a place cozy and quiet for sleeping. Is it the softness, the quietness, or something else? Share your thoughts with a friend or family member.

  2. Sound Detective: Go on a sound adventure! Close your eyes and listen carefully to the sounds around you. Can you hear birds chirping, cars passing by, or people talking? Make a list of the sounds you hear. Discuss which sounds would make it hard for Shelby to sleep and which sounds might be soothing. Try to find a quiet spot where you think Shelby would love to hibernate.

  3. Draw Shelby’s Journey: Use crayons or markers to draw a picture of Shelby’s journey to find the perfect sleeping spot. Include the different places Shelby tried to sleep, like the cave, the rocks, and the tall grasses. Add details like the noisy squirrels or the crashing waves. How could a bear sleep here?

Cracker, cracker, crunch! It was time for hibernation, but how could a bear sleep here? Then Shelby found the perfect cave—deep, dark, and peaceful—with no crunching squirrels or chattering birds, and no sign of those noisy people. What happened to the forest? How could a bear sleep here?

Shelby needed to nap, but where? Not by the rocks—ouch! Pinch, pinch, pinch! Or under the boardwalk—rattle, rattle, rattle! And certainly not on the pier—cow squawk! Oh, how could a bear sleep here?

Finally, Shelby slipped between the dunes and came across a cozy nook, sheltered by tall whispering grasses. He sniffed the salty air, snuggled up, and dreamed. The waves crashed and flies buzzed. Shelby didn’t stir until—swish, swoosh! Oh, how could a bear sleep here?

Shelby tipped, flipped, and flattened, then frantically dug a new hiding spot. The warm, heavy sand wrapped him like a blanket, and again Shelby slipped straight into the night when suddenly—boom, boom, boom! Shelby had never seen lightning like this! Oh, how could a bear sleep here?

Shelby darted and dived, covered his ears, and eventually dozed. But soon after sunrise—wait! Oh, how could a bear sleep here? Shelby started to run, but then he noticed a cub was in trouble. Luckily, Shelby was a strong swimmer, and he made the perfect float. What a rescue!

As a crowd grew, one thing became clear: a bear could never ever sleep here. Would Shelby find his way home? Yes! Shelby grabbed some souvenirs and snuck inside. He couldn’t wait to be back in his own wooded yard, full of crunching squirrels and chattering birds, where at last he would rest all winter long. Oh, a bear surely could sleep here!

Now that looks pretty cozy, don’t you think? I could sleep there myself!
