Drawing a Harp Seal Pup: A Fun Art Lesson

Welcome to our exciting art lesson! Today, we’re going to draw a cute and fluffy harp seal pup. Grab your markers and paper, and let’s have some fun creating art together!

Our Cool Studio Background

Before we start drawing, let’s check out our cool new studio background. It has our logo and blue lights that make it look like a spaceship! What do you think of it?

Step-by-Step Drawing Instructions

1. Drawing the Eyes

First, draw two big circles for the seal’s eyes on the right side of your paper. Leave a little space between them. Inside each eye, draw a smaller circle at the top left to show where the light shines. Color the big circles black but keep the small circles white.

2. Adding Details to the Eyes

To make the eyes look more lively, draw a small bump on the outside of each eye, like a “u” shape. Color these bumps in too.

3. Drawing the Nose and Mouth

Next, draw a “u” shape between the eyes for the nose. Add two smaller “u” shapes on each side for the nostrils. Below the nose, draw a curved line for a smiling mouth, and add a backward “j” on the other side to complete the smile.

4. Adding Whiskers

On each cheek, draw three little lines for whiskers. This will give your seal some character!

5. Sketching the Head and Body

Now, let’s draw the head. Start next to the left eye and draw a big upside-down “u” that curves around and ends just below the right eye. Connect the head to the ground with a curved line.

6. Drawing the Flippers

For the left flipper, draw a curve that looks like a sideways “j.” For the right flipper, draw a line that connects to the ground. Add three small curves at the end of each flipper to show the toes.

7. Completing the Body

Continue the ground line behind the flippers and draw a curve from the head that goes down to form the body. Don’t forget to add the back flipper, which should also connect to the ground.

8. Final Touches and Coloring

Great job! You’ve finished drawing your harp seal pup. Now it’s time to color it. Use gray, blue, and black. Start with dark blue around the seal and make it lighter towards the edges. Use gray for shading on the bottom and black for details around the nose and flippers.

Conclusion

Awesome work on your harp seal pup! Remember, it’s okay if your drawing looks different from ours; the most important thing is to have fun. If you need more time, feel free to pause and take your time with each step.

We hope you enjoyed this lesson and can’t wait to see your finished artwork! Share your creations with your friends and family. Happy drawing!

  • What was your favorite part of drawing the harp seal pup, and why did you enjoy it? Can you think of other animals you would like to draw?
  • How did you feel when you were adding the final touches and colors to your drawing? Did you try any new techniques or colors that you haven’t used before?
  • Imagine you could visit a place where harp seals live. What do you think it would be like there, and what other animals might you see?
  • Seal Pup Observation Walk: Take a walk with an adult and try to spot animals in your neighborhood or park. Look for animals that have features similar to the harp seal pup, like big eyes or whiskers. Draw a picture of one animal you see and compare it to your harp seal drawing. How are they similar or different?

  • Texture Exploration: Find different materials around your home that feel soft and fluffy, like the fur of a harp seal pup. These could be cotton balls, a soft blanket, or a stuffed animal. Touch each item and describe how it feels. Then, think about how you can use colors and shading in your drawing to make the seal pup look fluffy and soft.

  • Create a Story: Imagine a day in the life of your harp seal pup. What adventures might it have? Write a short story or draw a comic strip showing your seal pup’s day. Share your story with a friend or family member and ask them what they think your seal pup might do next.
