Today, we are going to make a fun art project with a candy cane and a cute little elf! This idea came from our creative friend, Kurt. Let’s get our supplies ready and start making some art magic!
Here’s what you need to make your candy cane surprise:
1. Fold the top of your paper down to meet the bottom edge.
2. Press the fold in the middle and out to the corners.
3. Fold the top flap back up to the top and press it down again.
4. Turn the paper over and fold it one more time.
1. Open the last fold to see your paper.
2. Put a scrap paper underneath to keep your table clean.
3. Use a marker to draw half of the candy cane above the fold and the other half below.
4. Draw two straight lines crossing the fold to make the candy cane shape.
5. Add a small upside-down “U” on the left for the hook and a bigger one on the right.
6. Connect the lines to make a thick candy cane.
7. Draw diagonal stripes from the bottom to the top of the candy cane.
1. Open the paper to see the whole candy cane.
2. On the left, draw a line from the top, but don’t connect it to the bottom yet.
3. Draw a big circle at the end for the elf’s glove, then an upside-down “U” for the thumb.
4. Imagine the line going through the glove to the bottom of the candy cane.
5. Do the same on the right side for the other glove.
1. Draw a bigger circle for the elf’s head on the side.
2. Add two small circles for eyes, with tiny circles inside for sparkle.
3. Draw a curve for a smile and zigzag lines for hair.
4. Make the elf’s ears with diagonal lines on top and curves on the bottom.
5. Draw an upside-down “U” for the elf’s hat, keeping it below the fold.
6. Add a jingle bell at the tip of the hat with a circle and a line.
1. Connect the elf’s head to the gloves and candy cane.
2. Draw the legs sticking out to the sides like a split.
3. Connect the legs with ovals for the fluffy pants.
4. Draw the elf shoes with small curves on top and big curves on the bottom.
1. Finish the stripes on the candy cane.
2. Color your drawing with bright colors for the candy cane and elf.
3. Take your time and pause if you need more time to finish a step.
Great job! You’ve made a wonderful candy cane folding surprise with an elf. You can add more fun things like Santa, Christmas trees, or other holiday decorations. Thanks to Kurt for this awesome idea. We hope you had fun and can’t wait to see what you create next! Happy holidays!
Explore Patterns: Look around your home or classroom for objects with stripes or patterns similar to the candy cane. Can you find any? Draw them on a piece of paper and color them in. Think about why patterns are used in different objects and how they make things look more interesting.
Elf Adventure Story: Imagine your elf from the art project goes on an adventure. Where does the elf go? What does it see? Write a short story or draw a series of pictures showing your elf’s journey. Share your story with a friend or family member and ask them what they think the elf might do next.
Color Mixing Fun: Use your coloring materials to experiment with mixing colors. Try combining two colors to see what new color you can create. For example, mix red and white to see what happens. Use these new colors to add unique touches to your candy cane and elf drawing. Discuss with a classmate or family member about other color combinations you can try.
