Drawing a Cartoon Alligator: A Fun Guide for Young Artists

Welcome to a fun and easy guide on how to draw a cartoon alligator! This step-by-step tutorial will help you create your own alligator drawing. Grab your art supplies, and let’s get started!

Materials Needed

Before we begin, make sure you have these materials ready:

  • A marker or drawing tool
  • Paper for sketching
  • Coloring supplies (colored pencils, crayons, etc.)

Step 1: Drawing the Alligator’s Eye

Start by drawing a big circle on the left side of your paper. This will be the alligator’s eye. Inside this circle, draw a smaller circle for the pupil. Remember, it’s okay if your eye looks different; the most important thing is to have fun!

Step 2: Adding Features to the Face

Now, let’s add some details to the alligator’s face:

  • Draw a curved line over the eye that looks like an upside-down “U.”
  • For the nose, draw a small line extending outwards, followed by a bump for the nostril. Inside this bump, add a little dot for the nostril.
  • Create the mouth by drawing a big curve that starts from the bottom of the eye and curves down to form a smile. You can curl the end of the smile upwards for a cheerful look.
  • Add a cheek and some sharp teeth sticking out to give your alligator a playful expression.

Step 3: Sketching the Body and Legs

Now it’s time to draw the alligator’s body:

  • Draw a line that curves down from the head to form the back and tail. Make it long and smooth, like a smile.
  • For the legs, start with the front leg by drawing a “U” shape that comes down and back up. Draw another “U” shape in front of it for the other leg, but only partially since it’s behind the first leg.
  • To complete the body, draw the belly by imagining a line coming from the bottom of the mouth and curving back.

Step 4: Completing the Legs and Tail

Continue by adding the back legs:

  • Draw another “U” shape for the back leg, and then add one more small “U” for the fourth leg.
  • Finish the tail by drawing a line that curves up and connects back to the body. Add a curved “M” shape at the bottom for the claws.

Step 5: Adding Details

To make your alligator look even cooler, add some bumps along its back. Draw curves that go down and back up, like a saddle shape. Continue adding these bumps until you reach the end of the tail. Don’t forget to add another eye bump on the other side of the head for a 3D effect!

Step 6: Coloring Your Alligator

Now that you’ve finished drawing, it’s time to color your alligator! You can use:

  • Yellow for the stomach and the bottom of the tail.
  • Green for the top part of the alligator.
  • Dark green can be used for shadows on the legs, but this step is optional for beginners.
  • A little white highlight on the bottom of the eye can make it look shiny.

Conclusion: Celebrate Your Creativity

Once you’ve finished coloring, take a moment to appreciate your artwork! Remember, it’s perfectly fine if your drawing looks different from others. The most important part of this activity is to have fun and practice your drawing skills. Keep creating, and we hope to see you again for more artistic adventures!

  • What was your favorite part of drawing the cartoon alligator, and why did you enjoy it the most?
  • Can you think of other animals you would like to draw in a cartoon style? What makes those animals interesting to you?
  • Have you ever seen a real alligator or a picture of one? How is your cartoon alligator similar or different from a real alligator?
  1. Alligator Observation Walk: Take a walk in your neighborhood or a nearby park with an adult. Look for things that remind you of the alligator you drew. Can you find objects that are green like your alligator? What about things that have a bumpy texture like the alligator’s back? Draw or write down what you see and share it with your class.

  2. Create Your Own Alligator Story: Use your drawing as the main character in a short story. What adventures does your cartoon alligator go on? Does it have any friends? Write a few sentences or tell your story to a friend or family member. You can even draw more pictures to go along with your story!

  3. Alligator Color Hunt: At home, look for items that match the colors you used for your alligator. Can you find something yellow like the alligator’s stomach or green like its back? Gather these items and create a colorful display. Share your collection with your family and explain why you chose each item.
