In this lesson, students learn how to draw a cute turtle using simple shapes and steps, starting with the shell and progressing to the head, legs, belly, and tail. The lesson encourages creativity by allowing students to decorate and color their turtles with their favorite colors. The key takeaway is to enjoy the drawing process and embrace individual artistic styles.
  1. What shape did we start with to make the turtle’s shell?
  2. How many legs does our turtle have?
  3. What colors can you use to make your turtle special?

Let’s Draw a Cute Turtle!

Today, we’re going to learn how to draw a super cute turtle! It’s going to be a lot of fun, and you can use markers, pencils, or crayons. Are you ready? Let’s get started!

What You Need

Before we start, make sure you have some drawing tools. You can use sharpies, pencils, or crayons, and you’ll need a piece of paper too!

Step 1: Drawing the Turtle’s Shell

Make the Shell Shape: First, draw a big rainbow line in the middle of your paper. This will be the top of the turtle’s shell. Connect the ends of the rainbow with a curved line at the bottom, like a gumdrop!

Add the Bottom of the Shell: Draw a curved line like a hat at the bottom to finish the shell shape.

Decorate the Shell: Add some stripes across the bottom part of the shell. You can make them close together or far apart, however you like!

Add Plates: Draw a curved line at the top of the shell, then a straight line down the middle. Add two more curved lines on each side to make the shell look cool.

Step 2: Drawing the Turtle’s Head

Outline the Head: Start at the top of the shell and draw a straight line up. Then, make a “C” shape for the turtle’s head.

Draw the Neck: Draw a hook or “J” shape from the head back to the shell for the neck.

Add the Eye: Draw a circle for the eye and a smaller circle inside for the shiny part. Color the big circle, but leave the small one white.

Step 3: Drawing the Turtle’s Legs

Front Legs: Draw an upside-down “U” shape for the front leg. Connect the bottom with a curved line for the foot, and add two bumps for toes.

Back Legs: Do the same for the back leg, making sure it’s the same height as the front leg. Add one bump for the toes on the back foot.

Step 4: Drawing the Belly and Tail

Connect the Belly: Draw a line from the neck to the foot to make the belly. Add another line between the legs to finish the belly shape.

Add the Tail: Draw a small line curling up for the tail, connecting it to the belly.

Step 5: Final Touches

Add Missing Legs: Don’t forget to draw the other front leg using the same upside-down “U” shape.

Design the Belly: Add a couple of lines on the belly for extra detail.

Coloring Your Turtle

Now it’s time to color your turtle! Pick your favorite colors and follow these steps:

Outline with Dark Green: Trace over the black lines of the shell with dark green, but don’t fill in the whole shell.

Color the Shell: Use light green to fill in the spaces between the dark green lines. This will make it look layered and cool!

Finish Up: Add any other colors you like to make your turtle special.

Conclusion

Yay! You’ve drawn a cute turtle! Remember, it’s okay if your turtle looks different from others. The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy drawing. Happy drawing!

  • What was your favorite part about drawing the turtle, and why did you like it? Can you think of other animals you would like to draw in a similar way?
  • When you were coloring your turtle, what colors did you choose and why? Do you have a favorite color that you like to use when drawing?
  • Have you ever seen a real turtle before? Where was it, and what did it look like? How is your drawing similar or different from a real turtle?
  1. Shell Patterns Exploration: Go outside and look for different patterns in nature, like on leaves or tree bark. Can you find any patterns that remind you of the turtle’s shell? Draw these patterns on a piece of paper and see how they compare to the turtle shell you drew. Share your findings with a friend or family member!

  2. Turtle Walk Observation: If you have a chance, visit a local park or zoo to observe turtles. Watch how they move and notice the shapes of their shells and bodies. Can you see the different parts you drew, like the shell, head, and legs? Try drawing another turtle based on what you see in real life.

  3. Color Mixing Fun: Experiment with mixing colors to find the perfect shades for your turtle. Use crayons or colored pencils to mix different greens and browns. What happens when you mix blue and yellow? Try creating a color chart with your new colors and use them to color another turtle drawing.
