How to Draw a Cicada: A Fun Guide

Drawing is a super fun way to be creative! Today, we’re going to learn how to draw a cicada. So, grab your markers or pencils and some paper, and let’s get started!

Step 1: Draw the Eye

First, draw a big oval shape on the left side of your paper. This will be the cicada’s eye. Inside the oval, add a tiny dot for the pupil. Cicada eyes are big and easy to see!

Step 2: Outline the Head

Next, draw the top of the head by curving a line out from the eye and then back in. From the bottom of the eye, draw a line that curves down and connects to the front of the head. Now your cicada has a cool head shape!

Step 3: Create the First Leg

Under the eye, draw an upside-down “U” shape. Connect the bottom of the “U” with a line that goes forward. Then, make a curve that comes down and back up to form the foot. Add a little hook at the end for extra detail.

Step 4: Connect the Head and Leg

Draw a small curve to connect the head to the leg. This makes it look like they belong together.

Step 5: Draw the Body

Start drawing the top of the body by curving a line from the head to the leg. This part is called the thorax.

Step 6: Add the Second Leg

Now, let’s draw the second leg. Make an oval shape and a long “U” shape for the leg. Don’t forget to add the foot with a hook at the end!

Step 7: Draw the Third Leg

For the third leg, draw another oval shape, but tip it a little to show it’s further back. Follow the same steps to create the leg and foot.

Step 8: Complete the Body

Keep drawing the body by curving down and then back up, connecting it to the legs. Add some lines to show the segments of the cicada’s body.

Step 9: Add the Wings

Cicadas have big wings! Start by drawing a diagonal line from the middle of the body, curving it to make the top of the wing. Then, draw the bottom of the wing, curving it past the body and making it pointy at the end. Do the same for the other wing.

Step 10: Add More Legs

Cicadas have six legs, so let’s add the rest. Draw a sideways “U” shape for the first leg, then make the foot. For the last two legs, draw shorter “U” shapes to show they are behind the other legs.

Step 11: Draw the Antennae

Finally, add the antennae by drawing two curved lines coming out of the head. Make one line higher than the other.

Step 12: Color Your Cicada

Now it’s time to color your cicada! You can add lines on the wings to make them look real. Use yellow or orange for the wings and light gray for the body to make it look see-through.

Conclusion

Great job! You’ve drawn a cicada! Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and keep practicing. You can add more details like leaves or even more cicadas in the background. Happy drawing!

  • What do you think makes drawing fun? Can you think of other things you like to draw besides cicadas?
  • Have you ever seen a cicada or another interesting insect in real life? What did it look like, and how would you draw it?
  • Why do you think cicadas have such big wings? How do you think their wings help them in nature?
  1. Nature Walk and Observation: Take a short walk in your garden or a nearby park with an adult. Look for insects and observe their features. Can you find any cicadas or other bugs with wings? Notice the shapes and colors of their bodies and wings. Draw what you see when you get back home and compare it to your cicada drawing. How are they similar or different?

  2. Create a Cicada Story: Use your imagination to create a short story about your cicada. Where does it live? What adventures does it go on? Draw a picture of your cicada in its home or on an adventure. Share your story and drawing with your family or friends.

  3. Build a Cicada Model: Use clay or playdough to make a 3D model of a cicada. Try to include all the parts you’ve learned about: the head, body, wings, legs, and antennae. Once you’re done, show your model to someone and explain each part of the cicada.
