How to Draw a Great White Shark: A Fun Guide

Let’s learn how to draw a cool great white shark! Get your drawing tools ready, and let’s have some fun!

What You Need

  • A black marker or Sharpie
  • Some paper
  • Colored pencils or oil pastels

Step 1: Drawing the Eye

Start by drawing a small dot on the left side of your paper. This will be the shark’s eye. We’re going to fill the whole page with our shark drawing!

Step 2: Sketching the Nose

Next, draw the shark’s nose. Begin with a tiny point in front of the eye. Then, make a big curve that goes over the eye and stretches back towards where the shark’s fin will be.

Step 3: Creating the Mouth

Now, let’s draw the mouth. Make a curve that goes back and then another curve that comes forward. Stop before you reach the front to keep the mouth just right.

Step 4: Drawing the Belly and Fins

Draw the shark’s belly by making a line under the mouth. Stop before you reach the line you drew before.

Now, draw the first fin. Start inside the body, curve down and back, then make a curve that goes back up and inwards at the end. Do this again at the top to make the front of the fin.

Step 5: Completing the Body

Imagine a line going from the back of the shark and start drawing the rest of the body. Make sure the belly flows smoothly under the fin.

Add two smaller fins towards the back. Draw the first small fin, then go back further to add another small fin.

Step 6: Drawing the Tail

For the tail, draw two lines: one that curves up and another that curves down. Make sure the lower line is shorter.

Draw a point where these lines meet, making sure it’s in front of the other two lines. Connect the top line down to the bottom with a curve, adding a little notch before finishing the tail.

Step 7: Adding Details

To make your shark look three-dimensional, add another fin at the top, making sure it’s shorter than the first.

Now, draw the gills. Make four lines in front of the fin but behind the mouth, connecting them to complete the gills.

Step 8: Coloring Your Shark

Now that your drawing is done, it’s time to color! Use a warm gray (like a brown-gray) to shade the shark, starting dark at the top and getting lighter towards the bottom. Color the front fin, back fin, and tail too.

To blend the colors, go over the shark with a white colored pencil for a smoother look. Use a black colored pencil to add sharp teeth and darken the eye and gills for extra detail.

Step 9: Final Touches

Add shading to the top of the shark’s body with the black colored pencil, and then smooth out the texture with the white pencil again.

Conclusion

Great job! You’ve drawn and colored a fantastic great white shark. With just a few colored pencils, you’ve made a realistic-looking shark. You can even add a background to make your artwork even cooler. We hope you had fun with this drawing lesson!

  • What do you think makes sharks, like the great white shark, interesting or special? Can you think of any other animals that are fun to draw and why?
  • Have you ever seen a shark in real life or in a movie? How did it make you feel, and what did you notice about how it looked or moved?
  • If you could add something to your shark drawing to make it unique, what would it be? Maybe a fun background or some colorful fish swimming around it?
  1. Shark Observation Walk: Take a walk around your neighborhood or visit a local aquarium. Look for objects or animals that remind you of the shapes you used to draw the shark. Can you find something that looks like a shark’s fin or tail? Draw what you see and compare it to your shark drawing.

  2. Shark Story Time: Create a short story about your great white shark. Where does it live? What adventures does it go on? Draw a picture for each part of your story. Share your story with your family or friends and see if they can add to it!

  3. Color Mixing Experiment: Use your colored pencils or oil pastels to mix colors and create different shades of gray. Try to match the colors you used for your shark. What happens when you mix different colors together? Can you make a new color for your shark’s background?
