Today, we’re going to have a fun time drawing a magical creature called a griffin! A griffin looks like a mix between an eagle and a lion. Get your paper and coloring tools ready, and let’s start our drawing adventure!
First, let’s make sure our paper is turned sideways. This way, we have lots of room to draw our big, amazing griffin!
Let’s start with the griffin’s eye. Draw a line that goes up and then down to make the eye shape. Add a circle inside for the pupil.
Next, draw the beak. Make a sideways “V” next to the eye. Then, draw a curve from the middle of the “V” to make the top beak. For the bottom beak, draw another curve that connects back to the “V” and add a little dot for the nostril.
From the beak, draw zigzag lines to make the feathers on the top of the head. Keep drawing zigzags for the feathers on the bottom of the head. Connect these with U-shaped curves to make the feathers look nice and fluffy.
Now, let’s draw the chest with a zigzag line. Draw another zigzag line from inside the body to the chest. For the front leg, draw a line down, then another line for the back of the leg.
To make the talons, draw a curve out from the front line, then curve down and back up to make a sharp claw. Do this again for the second talon and add a claw on the back of the leg. Add small “J” shapes for texture on the leg.
For the second front leg, draw a zigzag line for the feathers, overlapping it with the first leg. Draw the leg line down and make the talon just like before. Add the same texture to this leg too.
Let’s draw the wings! Start with a big curve like a sideways “J.” Add a bend and draw a big curve to the right, stopping to add feather details.
For the first row of feathers, draw a big sideways “U” shape and keep adding feathers until they connect with the wing. Make the feathers smaller as you go down the wing.
Now, let’s draw the lion part of the griffin. Imagine the back of the griffin coming from behind the wings. Draw a curve for the back and a diagonal line down for the first paw.
Add claws at the bottom of the paw and draw the back legs, overlapping them with the front leg. Draw the chest and belly with a smooth S-curve, and finish the back leg with its paw and claws.
To finish our griffin, let’s draw the lion tail. Start with a curve going out and then back in, leaving a little space at the end. Draw the end of the tail with a gentle curve.
Now it’s time to color your griffin! Use light to medium brown for the wings and body, and darker brown for shading. Use light gray for the feathers on the head, and add some yellow and orange for extra color.
Great job! You’ve drawn and colored your very own griffin. We hope you had fun on this drawing adventure. Take your time coloring and try different colors if you like. Happy drawing!
Griffin Observation Walk: Take a walk outside and look for animals or objects that remind you of a griffin. Can you find something that looks like an eagle or a lion? Draw what you see and think about how these real-life animals are similar to the griffin you drew. Share your drawings with a friend or family member and explain why you chose those objects or animals.
Create Your Own Mythical Creature: Use your imagination to create a new mythical creature by combining two or more animals, just like a griffin is a mix of an eagle and a lion. Draw your creature and give it a name. Think about what special powers or abilities it might have. Share your creature with the class and explain why you chose those animals to combine.
Griffin Story Time: Write a short story about an adventure your griffin might go on. Where does it live? What does it do during the day? Does it have any friends? Use your drawing as inspiration and share your story with your classmates. You can even act out your story with your friends, using your drawings as props!
