This lesson provides a step-by-step guide on how to draw a helicopter, making it an enjoyable activity for all ages. It covers the essential components, including the body, rotor, cockpit, and landing gear, while encouraging creativity through coloring and personalizing the drawing. By following the outlined steps, anyone can create their own unique helicopter illustration.
  1. What is the first thing you need to draw when making a helicopter?
  2. Can you name two parts of the helicopter that you added details to?
  3. How can you make your helicopter special when you color it?

How to Draw a Helicopter: A Fun Guide

Drawing a helicopter can be a lot of fun! With this easy guide, you’ll see how simple it is. Grab your markers and paper, and let’s start drawing!

Step 1: Draw the Helicopter’s Body

First, draw a long line across your paper for the bottom of the helicopter. Then, draw a short line going up for the tail and a slanted line going back.

Step 2: Make the Front of the Helicopter

At the front, draw a circle. From the circle, draw a short line up, then a longer slanted line going back. This makes the front part of the helicopter.

Step 3: Shape the Main Body

Draw a few slanted lines in different directions. Start with a short line going up, then a longer one, and finally a long line going back. This shapes the helicopter’s body.

Draw another slanted line going down, almost to the front’s height. Extend the tail back and draw another slanted line up to finish the tail. Connect the top of the tail to complete the helicopter’s shape.

Step 4: Add the Rotor and Mast

For details, draw two lines going up from the helicopter’s center for the mast. Draw a long line across the mast for the rotor. Make sure both sides are the same length. Add thickness to the rotor by drawing a thicker part near the mast.

Step 5: Draw the Tail Rotor

On the tail, draw a circle and make an “X” inside it with two lines. Add thickness by drawing a short line out from the circle and connecting it back with a slanted line.

Step 6: Create the Cockpit and Windows

Draw the cockpit windows by sketching a short line down, then a slanted line back, connecting it to the top. Add two lines to separate the front and back windows.

Step 7: Add Engines and Wings

For the engines, draw a line back from the cockpit, then a line down, and another long line back. Add a square at the engine’s front.

Draw the helicopter’s wings by sketching a straight line forward from the tail, followed by a curve connecting to the back. Do the same for the larger wing on the main body.

Step 8: Draw the Landing Gear

This helicopter has wheels! Draw a big circle below the wing for the main wheel, and a smaller circle inside for the tire’s center. Connect the wheel to the helicopter with two slanted lines. Do the same for a smaller wheel at the back.

Step 9: Add Details and Guns

To make your helicopter cool, draw a rectangle below the cockpit for guns. Make an “L” shape and connect it to the helicopter. Draw two lines from the rectangle for the gun barrel, and finish with a square at the end.

Step 10: Final Touches

Add more lines for details, like stabilizing lines on the rotor mast and extending the cockpit downwards.

Step 11: Color Your Helicopter

Your helicopter is ready! Now, color it in fun patterns or use your imagination to make it special. You can add stickers, numbers, or even missiles to make it unique.

Conclusion

Great job drawing your helicopter! We hope you had fun following these steps and adding your own creative touches. Happy drawing!

  • What was your favorite part of drawing the helicopter, and why did you like it the most?
  • Can you think of a time when you saw a helicopter in real life or in a movie? What did it look like, and what was it doing?
  • If you could add something special to your helicopter, like a new color or a fun design, what would it be and why?
  1. Helicopter Observation Walk: Take a walk outside or look out the window and try to spot helicopters in the sky. If you see one, observe its shape and parts. Can you identify the rotor, tail, and landing gear? Draw what you see and compare it to your drawing from the lesson. How are they similar or different?

  2. Build a Helicopter Model: Use craft materials like paper, cardboard, or clay to create a 3D model of a helicopter. Think about the parts you learned to draw: the body, rotor, tail, and landing gear. Once your model is complete, explain to a family member or friend how each part helps the helicopter fly.

  3. Imaginative Helicopter Design: Imagine you are designing a helicopter for a special mission. What features would it need? Draw your new helicopter design and label its special parts. Share your design with the class and explain what makes your helicopter unique and what mission it is designed for.
