March 14th is a special day called Pi Day! It’s all about a number called π (pi), which is about 3.14. This day is not only about math but also about having fun with pies!
To join the fun, you’ll need:
Once you have these, let’s start drawing a pie!
First, draw the top of your pie. Make a big rainbow line from one side to the other. This will be the top of your pie.
Next, draw a curved line at the bottom for the crust. The crust is a yummy part of the pie!
To make your pie look round, draw two lines from the sides that angle inward. Connect them with a curve at the bottom, just like the top.
Add some vent holes on top to make it look real. Draw a raindrop shape in the middle and two more on the sides, tilted for fun.
Give your pie a funny face! Draw two circles for eyes and smaller circles inside for pupils. Then, add a mouth with a big smile and maybe a tongue sticking out!
Now, it’s time to color your pie! Use any colors you like, but keep the small circles in the eyes white.
To make your pie look even more real, use a black colored pencil to add shading. Start dark at the edges and get lighter towards the center.
Shade the bottom of the pie and the crust too. Use a brown pencil to make the crust look toasty, starting dark and getting lighter.
Now that your pie drawing is done, take a look at your awesome work! It’s okay if your pie looks different. The most important thing is to have fun and practice drawing.
Happy Pi Day! Maybe you can celebrate with a real slice of pie too. Enjoy your day and keep creating!
Take a real pie or a round object like a pizza or a cake. With the help of an adult, cut it into equal parts. Count how many pieces you have and try to understand what a “whole” means. Discuss how each piece is a “fraction” of the whole pie. How many pieces make a whole pie? Can you find other objects at home that can be divided into equal parts?
Go on a scavenger hunt around your house or classroom to find objects that are circular. Make a list or draw pictures of these objects. Talk about how these objects are similar to the pie you drew. Can you find something that is exactly a circle? What makes it different from other shapes?
Write a short story or draw a comic about your pie drawing. What adventures does your pie go on? Does it meet other pies or desserts? Share your story with a friend or family member. This activity helps you think creatively and use your imagination, just like when you added a face to your pie drawing!
