In this lesson, students learn how to draw a sea turtle by following a series of simple steps, starting with the shell and progressing to the head, fins, and facial features. They are encouraged to add details and patterns to enhance their drawing, followed by coloring techniques to bring their turtle to life. The lesson concludes with an invitation for students to share their artwork, fostering a sense of accomplishment and creativity.
  1. What shape did we draw first to make the turtle’s shell?
  2. What colors did we use to make our turtle look nice?
  3. What special details did we add to the turtle’s fins and shell?

Let’s Draw a Sea Turtle!

Today, we’re going to learn how to draw a sea turtle! Sea turtles are amazing creatures that swim in the ocean. Grab your markers and paper, and let’s have some fun drawing!

What You Need

  • Markers
  • Paper

Step 1: Drawing the Turtle’s Shell

First, let’s draw the turtle’s shell. Imagine you’re looking at the turtle from above. Draw a big oval shape with a rounded point at the bottom. This will be the turtle’s shell.

Step 2: Adding the Turtle’s Head

Now, let’s give our turtle a head! Draw two lines going up from the shell to make the neck. Then, draw an upside-down “U” shape for the head. Make sure it has a little point at the top!

Step 3: Drawing the Fins

Our turtle needs fins to swim! On the right side, draw a diagonal line for the fin, curving it down. Add a curve at the end and connect it back to the shell. Do the same thing on the left side so your turtle has two front fins.

Step 4: Adding Details to the Fins

Let’s make the fins look real! Add some lines to show wrinkles on the fins. Then, draw the back fins using a curvy “S” shape. Don’t forget to add a tiny tail at the bottom of the shell!

Step 5: Adding Facial Features and Patterns

Time to give our turtle a face! Draw two eyes on the head. Now, let’s make the shell look cool. Draw a straight line around the shell’s edge, then add a wobbly line to make it look natural. Inside the shell, draw some lines and shapes to make patterns.

Step 6: Coloring the Turtle

Let’s bring our turtle to life with colors! Use light green for the turtle’s body and light yellow or brownish-yellow for the shell. To make it look even better, use medium brown to outline the shell shapes. Add dark brown spots on the fins and head. Make the spots bigger on the edges and smaller in the middle. Shade the fins to make them look 3D!

Conclusion

Great job! You’ve drawn a beautiful sea turtle. Remember, coloring and shading make your drawing look amazing. If you had fun, we’d love to see your artwork! Ask an adult to take a picture of your drawing and email it to us at [email protected]. Happy drawing!

  • What do you think makes sea turtles special compared to other animals? Can you think of any other animals that live in the ocean?
  • Have you ever seen a sea turtle in real life or in a movie? What did it look like, and what was it doing?
  • When you draw or color, what are your favorite colors to use, and why? How do you decide which colors to use for different parts of your drawing?
  1. Sea Turtle Observation Walk: Take a walk with an adult to a nearby park or beach. Look for things that remind you of a sea turtle, like rocks shaped like shells or patterns in the sand. Draw what you see and compare it to your sea turtle drawing. How are they similar or different?

  2. Create a Sea Turtle Habitat: Use a shoebox or a small container to create a sea turtle habitat. Gather materials like sand, small rocks, and leaves to mimic the ocean floor. Place your sea turtle drawing inside and imagine how it would live in the ocean. What other animals might live there too?

  3. Story Time with Your Turtle: Write a short story about an adventure your sea turtle might have in the ocean. Think about what it might see or do. Share your story with a friend or family member and ask them what they think your turtle might do next!
