Create Your Own Folding Surprise Puppet Shark

Introduction

Hello, little artists! Today, we’re going to have some fun by making a folding surprise puppet shark. This is a cool activity that anyone can enjoy. So, grab your art supplies, and let’s get started!

Materials Needed

To make your shark puppet, you will need:

  • Markers
  • Paper
  • Something to color with (like colored pencils or crayons)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare Your Paper

First, take your paper and fold the top edge down to meet the bottom edge. Make sure the edges line up nicely. Press down to make a crease in the middle and out to the corners.

Next, take the top flap and fold it back up to the middle of the paper, and press it down again.

2. Flip and Fold Again

Now, turn your paper over and do the same folding. Fold the bottom edge up to the top and press it down in the middle. Open this last fold to flatten it, then flip the paper back over so the folded part is at the top.

3. Drawing the Shark

Put a piece of scrap paper under your drawing to keep the markers from going through.

  • Draw the Shark’s Body: On the top fold, draw a half-circle, then another half-circle below it to make a full circle. Leave some space at the top for the shark’s fin.
  • Add the Eyes: Draw a big circle on the left and a smaller one on the right for the eyes. Add a tiny circle inside each eye for a sparkle, and color the big circles, leaving the sparkles white.
  • Nostrils: Draw two small dots between the eyes for the nostrils.
  • Fins: For the top fin, draw an upside-down “V”. For the side fins, make a curved “V” shape on both sides.

4. Creating the Shark’s Mouth

Open up your drawing to see the inside.

  • Mouth Structure: Connect the top and bottom of the shark’s mouth with straight lines on both sides. Draw the top of the mouth just below the fold and leave space on both sides. Then, draw the bottom of the mouth above the fold.
  • Teeth: Add sharp teeth by drawing zigzag lines for the top teeth and upside-down “V” shapes for the bottom teeth.
  • Tongue and Throat: Draw a “U” shape for the tongue, starting from the fold down to the teeth. Add two bumps on top of the “U” for detail. For the throat, draw a smaller “U” above the tongue and curve around to connect it to the tongue.

5. Coloring Your Shark

Now that your shark is drawn, it’s time to add color! Use gray for the top and fins, and feel free to get creative with the inside. You can add fish or other fun things inside the shark’s mouth.

6. Transforming into a Puppet

To turn your shark into a puppet, fold it back up. You can hold it by folding the top and bottom, allowing you to open and close the mouth. For easier handling, tape your fingers down to the paper, and flip it over to tape your thumb as well.

Conclusion

Yay! You’ve made your very own folding surprise puppet shark. We hope you had a great time making it and that your shark looks amazing. Feel free to add more details or characters to your puppet. Happy crafting, and see you next time!

  • What was your favorite part about making the folding surprise puppet shark, and why did you like it the most?
  • Can you think of other animals or creatures you would like to turn into a folding puppet? How would you draw them?
  • Have you ever seen a real shark or learned about them? What do you find interesting about sharks, and how are they different from your puppet shark?
  1. Shark Habitat Exploration: Take a trip to your local library or use the internet with an adult’s help to learn more about where sharks live. Draw a picture of a shark in its natural habitat, like the ocean. What other sea creatures might live there? Share your drawing and what you learned with your class or family.

  2. Shark Teeth Experiment: Sharks have different types of teeth for different purposes. Find some objects around your house, like a piece of fruit or a soft toy, and pretend they are shark food. Use different tools like a fork or spoon to mimic how sharks use their teeth to eat. Which tool works best for each type of “food”? Discuss why sharks might need sharp teeth.

  3. Create a Shark Story: Imagine your puppet shark has a day in the ocean. What adventures does it have? Write a short story or draw a comic strip about your shark’s day. Include other sea creatures it might meet and any exciting events. Share your story with your friends or family.
