In this lesson, students learn to draw an alligator by starting with the letter “A” and transforming it into a fun character using various crayons. The step-by-step instructions guide them through creating the alligator’s mouth, eyes, body, legs, and tail, while encouraging creativity with colors and additional details. By the end, students not only have a completed drawing but also an understanding of how to incorporate letters into art.
  1. What letter did we start with to draw our alligator?
  2. What colors did we use to color our alligator?
  3. Can you think of another animal we could draw using a letter?

Let’s Draw an Alligator!

Drawing is super fun, especially when we draw animals! Today, we are going to draw an alligator. Let’s start with the letter “A” and turn it into a cool alligator. Grab your crayons and paper, and let’s begin!

What You Need

  • Crayons (red, black, green, pink, orange)
  • Paper

Step 1: Start with the Letter “A”

First, draw the letter “A” at the bottom of your paper. This will be the alligator’s mouth. Use a red crayon to make an upside-down “V” shape. Make it tall so your alligator has a big mouth. Then, cross the “V” in the middle to finish the letter “A.”

Step 2: Make the Alligator’s Mouth

Turn your paper sideways and grab your black crayon. Draw zigzag lines inside the “A” to make sharp teeth. Add more zigzag lines at the bottom for extra teeth.

Step 3: Add an Eye

Now, let’s give our alligator an eye! Use your black crayon to draw a circle (like the letter “O”) above the mouth. Inside the circle, add a small dot for the pupil. You can even add eyelashes if you want!

Step 4: Draw the Nose and Chin

Switch to your green crayon. Draw a straight line up from the mouth to make the nose. Connect this line to the eye. Then, draw a curved line for the chin, like a little beard.

Step 5: Outline the Body

To make the body, draw a rectangle starting from the eye and going down. Draw two curved lines for the back and another line for the belly to make a square or rectangle shape.

Step 6: Add the Tail

From the top of the rectangle, draw a big curve that goes down and around to make the tail. At the end, make a point by curving back into the rectangle shape.

Step 7: Draw the Legs

Our alligator needs legs! Draw two rectangle shapes for the front legs from the belly. Do the same for the back legs. Now your alligator has four legs!

Step 8: Color Your Alligator

Time to color! Use your green crayon to fill in your alligator. Take your time and color it nicely.

Step 9: Add Details

With your black crayon, add nostrils on the nose and claws on each foot. You can also add toenails for extra detail.

Step 10: Final Touches

For some fun, use a pink crayon to add a cheek and an orange crayon to draw little spikes along the back and tail. Don’t forget to add an eyebrow for character!

Conclusion

Yay! You did it! You drew and colored an alligator. You can add a background, baby alligators, or even water to your picture. Remember, we started with the letter “A” because alligator begins with “A.” Have fun and keep drawing!

  • What was your favorite part of drawing the alligator, and why did you like it the most?
  • Can you think of other animals that start with the letter “A”? How would you draw them using letters or shapes?
  • Have you ever seen a real alligator or another interesting animal? What did it look like, and how did it make you feel?
  1. Alligator Adventure Walk: Take a walk outside and pretend to be an alligator! Observe your surroundings and look for things that start with the letter “A,” just like alligator. Can you find an apple, an ant, or an airplane in the sky? Share what you find with a friend or family member.

  2. Shape Hunt: Look around your home or classroom for objects that are shaped like the parts of your alligator drawing. Can you find something shaped like a rectangle for the body or a triangle for the tail? Draw or list the items you find and see how many shapes you can match to your alligator drawing.

  3. Alligator Story Time: Create a short story about your alligator. What is its name? Where does it live? What adventures does it go on? Draw a picture to go along with your story and share it with your class or family. Use your imagination and have fun!
