First, let’s start by creating a new Sprite. Hover over the “Choose a Sprite” button and click on “Paint” because we’re going to paint our own Sprite. Pick a color for the transparent object you want to draw. For this tutorial, I’ll make a transparent orange flame, but you can choose any color you like!
Click on the rectangle tool to draw a rectangle. But wait, let’s make it better! Delete the rectangle and remove its outline. Now, draw a rectangle that fills the entire screen. Click on the fill option and set it to a gradient. Instead of a regular gradient, choose a second color that is transparent. This will create a gradient from your chosen color to a transparent one.
We can make this even cooler! To turn the gradient into a solid transparent color, use the point editing tool. This tool lets you change the shape by clicking and dragging its corners. Create a small transparent section by adjusting the points.
Switch back to the main selection tool and drag your small transparent square to make it larger. Now you have a big transparent shape! Use the point editing tool to shape it into whatever you want. For my flame, I’ll drag the points to make it look like a flame, with a curved bottom.
If you want to add more details, like a yellow core in the middle of the flame, you can do that too! Click on fill again, change it from gradient to a solid color, and pick a yellow shade. Draw a small circle in the middle for the core.
Now we have our flame! If it’s too big, you can resize it to make it smaller, like size 60. You can use this transparent shape in any of your Scratch projects. Just click on the code tab to add some code and make it interactive!

Hey everyone, it’s Zia here! Today, I wanted to make an art tutorial and show you how you can create drawings in Scratch using transparent colors. You might know that it’s possible to create gradients in Scratch, but I’ll show you a trick to make completely transparent shapes.
So the first thing to do is hover over the button that says “Choose a Sprite” and click “Paint” because we’re going to paint a Sprite. Let’s pick a color for the transparent object that we’re going to draw. I will draw a little transparent flame as an example, a transparent orange flame. You can set the color to whatever you want.
I’ll click on the rectangle tool to draw out a rectangle. Actually, I am going to delete that one and click on the outline to remove it. So I’ll click on the rectangle tool and drag out a rectangle to fill the entire screen. Now I’ll click on the fill again and set it to have a gradient. Instead of going from orange to pink or something like that, you can click here for the second color in the gradient, and now it’s a gradient from orange to a transparent color.
But we can do even better than this. You can see the gradient effect, but we would like it to just be one solid, transparent color. Here’s a trick for how to do that. I’ll click on the point editing tool, which lets you click on a shape and edit the points of it. I’m going to click and drag the corners of this shape to create a small transparent section of the gradient.
Now I can click on the main selection tool again. I have this little transparent square, and I can drag it up to a larger size. Now we have this large, transparent shape to work with. You can use the point editing tool to shape it into the object you want. I wanted a little flame, so I can drag in these angular points into the shape that I want for the flame, dragging them inward.
I want the bottom of the flame to be curved, and I can do that by clicking on that point and selecting “Curved” to make it a curved point. I might drag the points around a bit, add a point there, and play with the handles to change the curve around that point.
I’m pretty pleased with that. That’s my little flame, and as you can see, it is transparent. I could even add a little yellow core in the middle that isn’t transparent. To do that, I just have to click on fill again, change it from gradient to solid color, and then change that color to some kind of yellow. I could drag out a little circle in the middle to give it a yellow core.
Now we have our little flame. It’s actually kind of big, so maybe I’ll make it a bit smaller, like size 60 or something like that. You have an object that has a transparent color in it, and you can put it anywhere in your project. You could click on the code tab and add code to it.
