Today, we’re going to learn about Johnny Appleseed, a special person who loved planting apple trees. March 11th is a great day to think about planting apple trees, and September 26th is his birthday. Let’s have fun drawing Johnny Appleseed together!
Before we start, make sure you have these things:
Start by drawing a small oval in the middle of your paper for Johnny’s nose. Then, draw two circles for his eyes, one on each side of the nose. To make his eyes look shiny, draw smaller circles inside the big ones. Color the big circles black and leave the small circles white.
Draw a happy smile under the nose with a curved line. Next, outline his head by drawing a curve from one eye, down and around, and back up to the other eye.
Johnny Appleseed wore a special hat that looked like a pan. Draw a line across the top of his head for the hat’s base, making it stick out on both sides. Then, draw an arch on top for the pan and add a handle by drawing two lines sticking out from the side.
On each side of Johnny’s head, draw a “C” shape for one ear and a backward “C” for the other. Add lines on both sides of his head for his hair and color it in.
Draw two lines going down from his chin for his body. For his legs, draw an upside-down “V” shape between the lines. Add U-shaped outlines at the bottom for his feet.
To give Johnny some shorts, draw a line across the middle of his body and add lines on each leg. Draw a satchel by making a backward “C” next to his body and a line for the strap.
Draw lines from the sides of his body for his arms, curving them inwards. Add short sleeves. On one side, draw a walking stick by making an upside-down “U” shape connecting to his hand.
In one hand, draw a circle for an apple, adding a stem and a leaf. You can also draw more apples on the ground by making more circles with stems and leaves.
To show Johnny’s love for apple trees, draw a small plant growing from the ground. Make bumps for the dirt, a stem curving to the right, and branches with leaves.
Great job! You’ve finished drawing Johnny Appleseed. Now, color him in with your favorite colors. Use your imagination and have fun!
We hope you enjoyed this drawing lesson and had fun making your own Johnny Appleseed. Remember, the best part is to practice and enjoy drawing. Happy drawing!
Apple Tree Observation: Go outside with a grown-up and find an apple tree or any tree nearby. Look closely at the tree and notice its parts like the trunk, branches, leaves, and any fruit it might have. Draw what you see and compare it to the apple tree you drew with Johnny Appleseed. How are they similar or different?
Plant Your Own Seed: With the help of an adult, plant an apple seed or any other seed in a small pot. Water it regularly and watch it grow over time. Keep a drawing journal to sketch how your plant changes each week. What do you notice about its growth? How does it remind you of Johnny Appleseed’s love for planting trees?
Story Time Exploration: Ask a grown-up to read you a story about Johnny Appleseed or another person who loves nature. After the story, draw a picture of your favorite part. What did you learn about Johnny Appleseed or the character in your story? How can you be like them and help nature?
