Hello, friends! Welcome to “Circle Time.” I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team, and today we have a special activity lined up for you. I’m excited to introduce you to my friend Kim, an animator who brings drawings to life. Kim will guide us through the process of drawing Kodi Bear, a beloved character from our app.
Before we start, let’s make sure we have everything we need. You’ll need a piece of paper, a black marker, and some colors. Crayons, markers, or colored pencils will work just fine. The colors you’ll need for Kodi are dark teal (a bluish-green), light teal, yellow, and pink. Go ahead and gather these supplies, and we’ll begin drawing with Kim once you’re ready.
Kim is here to help us draw Kodi Bear’s face using simple shapes. We’ll start by drawing a large circle for Kodi’s face, taking up almost half of the page. Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect. Next, we’ll add two smaller circles for the ears, one on each side of the head.
Now, let’s focus on the face. We’ll draw another circle for the area around Kodi’s smile and nose, placing it near the middle of the face but slightly lower. Once that’s done, it’s time to add the nose. Draw a line from the top to the bottom of the circle and color it in black.
Kodi is a happy character, so let’s give her a big, cheerful smile. Draw a line from the tip of the nose down to the mouth. Next, we’ll add two more circles for the eyes, bringing our total to six circles so far. Finally, draw two smaller circles inside the eyes for the pupils, making it eight circles in total.
Now comes the fun part—adding color! Start with yellow for the face, then use pink for the ears. For the two blue-green colors, use the darker shade inside. Take your time and enjoy the coloring process. If your marker starts to run out, don’t worry; just do your best.
Once you’re done, write Kodi’s name on your drawing: K-O-D-I. You’ve just created a fantastic drawing of Kodi Bear!
Before we wrap up, let’s watch a video of Kodi Bear in action. Remember, Kim is an animator, which means she can make drawings move. This video showcases Kodi Bear hopping around, illustrating the concept of verbs. It’s a fun way to see how drawings can come to life!
Thank you for drawing with us today. We hope you had as much fun as we did. Feel free to draw Kodi Bear again later or try drawing one of our other characters. We look forward to seeing you again tomorrow. Goodbye for now from Caroline and the Khan Academy Kids team!
Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around your house or classroom! Look for objects that are circles, like Kodi Bear’s face and ears. Can you find other shapes too? Draw or take pictures of the objects you find and share them with your friends or family. This will help you see how shapes are everywhere in our world, just like in our drawings.
Color Mixing Magic: Let’s explore colors like the ones we used for Kodi Bear. Take some paints or colored pencils and try mixing different colors to see what new colors you can create. For example, mix blue and green to make teal. What happens when you mix other colors? Create a color chart with your discoveries and use it in your next drawing!
Story Time with Kodi Bear: Imagine a short story where Kodi Bear goes on an adventure. What does Kodi do? Where does she go? Draw a picture of Kodi in a new place or doing something fun. Share your story and drawing with your family or friends. This helps you think creatively and practice storytelling, just like animators do when they bring characters to life!
