Hello, friends! Today, we’re going to have a fun time together with Caroline and Sophie from the Khan Academy Kids Team. They have a special activity planned for us, and it’s one of their favorites—drawing!
Before we start drawing, Caroline and Sophie want to share some amazing artwork from their friends. Joanna sent a lovely note and a drawing of three characters. Her writing was clear and easy to read. Joanna drew Peck, Reya, and Kodi. Peck is in the middle with his feathers and long beak, Reya is on the left, and Kodi is on the right with his round ears and face. Great job, Joanna!
Next, we have Kennedy’s drawing of Reya. Kennedy did an amazing job capturing Reya’s stripey tail, big ears, eyes, and nose. The colors are perfect, with blue ears and a pink body, just like Reya. Did you know Reya is a red panda? They’re very special pandas!
Now, it’s time to draw with Kim, an animator who makes characters move. Today, Kim will show us how to draw Ollo, a friendly elephant who loves being creative. Ollo enjoys painting, sketching, and drawing with crayons and chalk. Let’s be like Ollo and get creative!
To draw Ollo, you’ll need a piece of paper, a pencil, a black marker, and two colors: light blue and pink. Ready? Let’s start!
1. Begin with a pencil and draw a light circle for Ollo’s head.
2. Use a black marker to draw Ollo’s trunk. Start from the circle, draw a line down, dip it a little, and bring it back up to the circle.
3. Outline part of the pencil circle to connect it to the trunk.
4. Draw an oval for Ollo’s nose and two smaller ovals for his nostrils. Take a deep breath through your nostrils!
5. Add a small line for Ollo’s smile and three lines on his trunk.
6. Draw Ollo’s big ears. Start with a dot, draw three poofs down and back up. Repeat on the other side.
7. Draw Ollo’s eyes as ovals and color the pupils black.
8. Color Ollo’s ears and nostrils pink, and his body blue.
Ollo loves letters and the alphabet, so he’s an “alphabet elephant.” Try saying that three times fast!
Did you have fun drawing Ollo? We’d love to see your drawings! Ask a grown-up to help you send them to us. Before we go, let’s watch a video of Ollo moving, made by Kim. Ollo is playing basketball and teaching us that the letter B makes the “buh” sound, like in “ball.”
Thank you for joining us today! We hope you had fun drawing and learning. Don’t forget to send us your Ollo drawings if you’re proud of them. See you next time with Caroline and Sophie from the Khan Academy Kids team. Goodbye, friends!
Character Exploration: Think about the characters you learned about today: Peck, Reya, Kodi, and Ollo. Choose one character and imagine what their favorite activity might be. Draw a picture of them doing this activity. For example, if you choose Ollo, you might draw him painting a picture. Share your drawing with a friend or family member and explain why you think this activity suits the character.
Color and Nature Walk: Go on a nature walk with a grown-up and look for colors that remind you of the characters you drew. Can you find something pink like Reya’s body or blue like Ollo’s ears? Collect small items or take pictures of these colors. When you return, use these colors to create a new drawing or collage inspired by your walk.
Alphabet Adventure: Ollo is an “alphabet elephant” who loves letters. Choose a letter from the alphabet and think of three things that start with that letter. Draw a picture of each thing and try to write the word next to it. For example, if you choose the letter “B,” you might draw a ball, a butterfly, and a boat. Share your drawings and words with someone and practice saying the letter sound together.
