Hello, friends! Welcome to Circle Time. I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team, and today, I’m here with my friend Sophie. We’re going to have a fun time drawing together!
We received some amazing drawings from our friends. Let’s take a look at Caitie’s drawing. It looks like an owl! Caitie used a special technique to add texture, which makes the colors look interesting and not just flat. It seems like Caitie rubbed a crayon over a rough surface to create a pattern that looks like honeycomb or snake skin. Isn’t that creative?
Next, we have a drawing from Kelli. She drew Ollo, and she looks very happy with her work. Drawing can make us feel happy, don’t you think?
Today, we’re going to draw some of Ollo’s toys with the help of our friend Kodi. Do you have a favorite toy? Ollo has many cool toys, including bath toys. Let’s draw two of his favorites: a dinosaur and a submarine.
First, let’s draw the dinosaur. Start with an oval shape for the head, leaving it open at the bottom. Add a small circle for the eye and color it in, leaving a tiny circle uncolored for a sparkle. Draw a “U” shape for the smiling mouth. This dinosaur is a Brachiosaurus, so it has a long neck. Draw two curved lines from the bottom of the head for the neck.
Next, draw the body with a curved line connecting to the neck. Add three spots on the dinosaur’s back and a curved triangle for the tail. For the legs, draw three rounded rectangles under the body. Now, color your dinosaur! Ollo’s dinosaur is purple with orange and yellow spots. What color will yours be?
Now, let’s draw the submarine. Start with a sideways egg shape for the main part. Add a rectangle on top for the telescope, with two straight lines and curved lines for the top. Draw a fin at the back and windows on the submarine.
Color the submarine with yellow for the main part, orange for the telescope, and pink for the windows. Use light blue for the glass parts. For the tail, draw arches and color them in. Your submarine is ready!
Ollo has lots of bath toys, and you can see them in his room in the Khan Academy Kids app. There are ducks, a hippo, a helicopter, and more. You can draw these toys too!
There are so many things you can draw with your toys. Maybe you can draw them on an adventure, at the beach, or cooking a meal. The possibilities are endless!
Thank you for joining us today. We hope you have a great time creating lots of drawings and playing. See you next time!
Goodbye from Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids team!
Texture Hunt: Just like Caitie used a crayon to create texture in her drawing, you can explore textures around your home. Take a piece of paper and a crayon, and find different surfaces like a leaf, a coin, or a piece of fabric. Place the paper over the surface and gently rub the crayon on top. What patterns do you see? Try to use these textures in your drawings to make them more interesting!
Toy Adventure Story: Choose one of your favorite toys and imagine it going on an adventure. Where would it go? What would it do? Draw a picture of your toy in its adventure setting. You can also write a short story about its journey. Share your drawing and story with a friend or family member and ask them about their toy’s adventure!
Color Mix and Match: When you color your dinosaur or submarine, try mixing different colors to see what new shades you can create. For example, what happens if you mix blue and yellow? Try coloring a small part of your drawing with the new color. Can you find objects around your home that match the colors you’ve created? This will help you learn more about colors and how they work together!
