share us on:

In this lesson, young artists are introduced to a fun “Circle Time” activity led by Caroline and her friend Kim, an animator. They learn how to draw Peck, a cheerful character, by following step-by-step instructions and using specific colors, while also engaging in a brief warm-up exercise. The lesson concludes with a demonstration of animation, showcasing how drawings can come to life, and encourages creativity and participation among the children.
  1. What colors did we use to draw Peck?
  2. Can you tell me what an animator does?
  3. What was your favorite part of drawing Peck?

Welcome to Circle Time with Caroline!

Hello, young artists! I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team, and I’m so excited to welcome you to a special “Circle Time” today. We have a fun activity planned with my friend Kim, who is an animator. Do you know what an animator does? They draw pictures and make them move! Today, Kim will teach us how to draw one of our favorite friends, Peck.

What You’ll Need

Before we start, let’s gather a few things you’ll need for drawing Peck:

  • Paper
  • A black marker or pen
  • Three colors of crayons, pencils, or markers: teal (green or blue), yellow, and orange

Feel free to pause here and grab these supplies. Once you’re ready, let’s meet Kim!

Meet Kim and Let’s Start Drawing!

Hi there! I’m Kim, and I’m thrilled to be here with you. Let’s head to the art room and start drawing Peck. Peck is full of energy, loves to sing, talk, and play with friends. He always has a big smile, and we’ll capture that in our drawing today.

Before we begin, let’s warm up our hands. Stretch your fingers and rotate your wrists. Ready? Let’s draw Peck’s face!

Drawing Peck’s Face

We’ll start with a big circle in the middle of the page for Peck’s face. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect; just try your best. Next, we’ll draw Peck’s feathers. He has yellow feathers on top and blue ones below, like a little mask.

Watch me first: draw a V shape on his face. Above the V will be yellow, and below will be blue. Now, let’s move on to his beak and smile. Start with a line for the top of his beak, then another line for the bottom. Add a curved line for his smile. Connect these lines to complete the beak.

Adding Peck’s Eyes and Hair

Time for Peck’s eyes! Draw two circles above the beak, then add smaller circles inside for the pupils. Now, let’s give Peck his silly hair feathers. He has five poufs of hair. Start above his eyes and count as you draw: one, two, three, four, five!

Coloring Peck

Let’s bring Peck to life with colors! Use yellow for the feathers above the V, blue for the feathers below, and orange for his beak and hair. Take your time and try to stay within the lines.

And there you have it—your very own drawing of Peck! I can’t wait to see how yours turned out.

Animating Peck

Thank you, Kim, for teaching us how to draw Peck. Now, let’s see some of Kim’s animation work. Remember, animators make drawings move. Here’s a video of Peck counting snowballs. He had 11, but some melted, leaving 8. How many melted? Let’s count together!

Thank you, Peck and Kim, for sharing your skills with us. And thank you, friends, for joining us today. I hope you had fun drawing Peck. We’ll see you tomorrow for more exciting activities. Goodbye for now!

  • What was your favorite part about drawing Peck? Can you think of other characters or animals you would like to draw and color?
  • Have you ever seen an animated movie or show? What do you think makes the characters look like they are moving?
  • Peck loves to sing, talk, and play with friends. What are some activities you enjoy doing with your friends, and why do you like them?
  1. Peck’s Adventure Story: Create a short story about Peck going on an adventure. Use your imagination to think about where Peck might go and what he might do. Draw a picture for each part of the story. Share your story and drawings with a friend or family member. What colors will you use to show Peck’s emotions during his adventure?

  2. Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around your home or outside. Look for objects that are teal, yellow, and orange, just like the colors you used for Peck. Make a list or draw pictures of the items you find. How many different things can you find in each color? Discuss with a friend or family member why you think these colors were chosen for Peck.

  3. Animate Your Own Peck: Try making a simple flipbook animation of Peck. Use small pieces of paper or sticky notes. On each page, draw Peck in a slightly different position. Flip through the pages quickly to see Peck move! What kind of actions can you make Peck do? Show your flipbook to someone and explain how animators make drawings move.
