In today’s Circle Time with Caroline, children learned about drawing and animation with special guest Kim, who guided them in creating a character named Reya, a red panda. The lesson included step-by-step instructions for drawing Reya’s face and coloring her, followed by a fun introduction to sentence structure using Reya as a teaching tool. The session concluded with Caroline encouraging kids to continue their creativity and look forward to future lessons.
  1. What did we learn about Reya the red panda today?
  2. Can you tell me what an animator does?
  3. What are the two parts of a sentence that Reya taught us about?

Welcome to Circle Time with Caroline!

Hello, friends! Welcome to Circle Time. I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids Team, and I’m so happy to see you all here. Since many of us can’t go to school right now, we’re having Circle Time to connect, learn, and do fun activities together. Today, we have a special guest, my friend Kim, who is an animator. Do you know what an animator is? An animator is someone who draws and makes those drawings move!

Meet Kim, the Animator

Kim is going to teach us how to draw one of our characters, Reya. Reya is a red panda. Before we start, let’s gather the materials we’ll need: a piece of paper, a black marker, and some colors. You’ll need light pink, dark pink, light blue, and cream (or light yellow) crayons, markers, or colored pencils. Ready? Let’s meet Kim!

Drawing Reya the Red Panda

Hi, everyone! I’m Kim, and today we’re drawing Reya. She has a sweet personality and fun colors. We’ll focus on drawing her face. Let’s start by looking for shapes in her face. Do you see any? Let’s begin!

First, draw a half-circle for her face. Connect the sides with a curved line. Next, draw her ears like cat ears, but remember, Reya is a red panda! Now, draw a teardrop shape in the center near the bottom for her nose. The nose is an upside-down triangle, and add a smile with a line from the nose to the smile, called a philtrum.

For her eyes, draw two circles and add pupils. Reya has lighter-colored fur patterns around her eyes and cheeks. Draw half-circles around her eyes and curved rectangles for her cheeks. Now, let’s color! Use light pink for the patterns, dark pink for the rest of her face, and blue for her ears. If you don’t have cream, use yellow for the middle part with her nose and smile. Great job!

Thank You, Kim!

Wow, those were wonderful drawings of Reya! Let’s all say a big thank you to Kim for teaching us. Thank you, Kim! Remember, Kim is an animator, which means she can make drawings move. Let’s watch Reya in action as she teaches us about sentences.

Learning About Sentences

Reya loves to read and teaches us that most sentences have a subject and an action word. For example, in “The bird sang,” the bird is the subject, and sang is the action word. That was fun!

Goodbye for Now!

Thank you for joining me, friends. It’s time to say goodbye for now. Maybe later, you can draw Reya again or choose another character like Kodi, Peck, Sandy, or Ollo. I hope to see you again tomorrow. Goodbye from Caroline and the Khan Academy Kids Team. Bye-bye!

  • What was your favorite part about drawing Reya the Red Panda? Can you think of any other animals you would like to draw?
  • Kim is an animator who makes drawings move. Have you ever seen a cartoon or animation that you really liked? What was it about, and what did you like most about it?
  • Reya taught us about sentences having a subject and an action word. Can you make up a fun sentence about something you did today? What was the subject and what was the action word?
  1. Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around your house or classroom! Look for objects that have the same shapes we used to draw Reya’s face, like half-circles, triangles, and teardrops. Can you find something with a circle shape like Reya’s eyes? Draw or take a picture of the objects you find and share them with your friends or family.

  2. Create Your Own Character: Use the same steps we learned to draw Reya and create your own animal character. Think about what shapes you can use for their face, ears, and nose. Give your character a name and a fun personality. Once you’re done, color your character and tell a short story about them. What do they like to do?

  3. Sentence Building Game: Let’s play a sentence building game! Write down different subjects (like “The cat,” “A dog,” “My friend”) and action words (like “jumps,” “runs,” “sleeps”) on separate pieces of paper. Mix them up and pick one from each pile to create funny sentences. Try to draw a picture of one of your sentences. What does it look like?
