In this Circle Time lesson with Caroline and Sophie, children are introduced to Reya, the red panda from Khan Academy Kids, and her love for bugs. The session includes a drawing activity where kids learn to draw various bugs, such as ladybugs, beetles, and butterflies, while also exploring Reya’s bug habitat. The lesson encourages creativity and engagement with nature through art and storytelling.
  1. What is your favorite bug that Reya likes?
  2. Can you tell me how to draw a ladybug like Kodi showed us?
  3. What do you think a bug habitat is and why do you think Reya loves it?

Welcome to Circle Time with Caroline and Sophie!

Hello, friends! It’s wonderful to see you. Welcome to Circle Time! I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team, and I’m here with my friend Sophie. Hi, Sophie!

Meet Reya and Her Love for Bugs

Today, we’re going to have a very “buggy” episode because we’ll be drawing some of Reya’s favorite bugs! Do you know who Reya is? Yes, Reya is the red panda in Khan Academy Kids! Before we start drawing, we have a special show-and-tell from our friend Rebecca, who shared her drawing of Reya. Thank you, Rebecca!

Let’s Draw Some Bugs!

Now, let’s get ready to draw some of Reya’s bugs. Reya loves bugs, and we hope you do too! Some of our friends have favorite bugs. Jessica loves ladybugs, Maku likes Christmas beetles, and Emily’s favorite is the grasshopper. What’s your favorite bug?

Our friend Kodi will show us how to draw some of Reya’s favorite bugs. Let’s start with a ladybug:

  • Draw a squished C-shape for the head.
  • Add circles for the eyes and color the irises black.
  • Draw a U-shape for the smile and add antennae on top.
  • For the body, draw a straight line and a half-circle.
  • Add spots and legs that look like the number two.
  • Color the ladybug with your favorite colors!

Next, let’s draw a cool beetle with pincers:

  • Start with a C-shape for the head and add pincers.
  • Draw the eyes and a happy smile.
  • Add antennae and a long, skinny body with wings.
  • Draw legs and color the beetle with your choice of colors.

Finally, let’s draw a beautiful butterfly:

  • Draw an oval for the head and circles for the eyes.
  • Add a smile and curly antennae.
  • Draw a circle and an oval for the body.
  • Create heart-shaped top wings and oval bottom wings.
  • Add fun patterns and color the butterfly with bright colors.

Explore Reya’s Room

Now that we’ve drawn some bugs, let’s take a tour of Reya’s room in Khan Academy Kids. Reya has a bug habitat where you can see different bugs like bumblebees, butterflies, dragonflies, and colorful beetles. A habitat is a place where something lives, and Reya loves to collect bugs!

Goodbye for Now!

Thank you for drawing with us and learning about bugs with Reya. We hope to see you again next time. Goodbye for now from Khan Academy Kids!

  • What is your favorite bug, and why do you like it? Have you ever seen it in your backyard or at the park?
  • If you could create a new bug, what would it look like? What colors would it have, and what special features would it include?
  • Reya has a special habitat for her bugs. Can you think of a place in your home or garden where bugs might like to live? What kind of bugs do you think you would find there?
  1. Bug Hunt Adventure: Go on a bug hunt in your backyard or a nearby park with an adult. Look for different types of bugs and observe their colors, shapes, and sizes. Can you find a ladybug, beetle, or butterfly like the ones you drew? Draw a picture of the bugs you find and share your discoveries with your friends or family.

  2. Create a Bug Habitat: With the help of an adult, create a small bug habitat using a clear container. Add some soil, leaves, and small twigs. Carefully place a bug you find into the habitat and watch how it moves and behaves. Remember to release the bug back into nature after observing it. What did you notice about how the bug interacts with its environment?

  3. Bug Story Time: Imagine you are a bug living in Reya’s room. Write a short story or draw a comic strip about your adventures in the bug habitat. What kind of bug are you? What do you see and do in Reya’s room? Share your story with your class or family and see what adventures they come up with!
