  3. Why do you think each snowflake is special and different?

Let’s Make Paper Snowflakes!

Hey there! Today, we’re going to have some fun making paper snowflakes. My friend Caitlin is here to help us celebrate the changing seasons. Are you ready to get started?

What You’ll Need

To make your own paper snowflakes, you’ll need a few things:

  • A square piece of paper
  • Scissors (make sure your parents know you’re using them!)
  • A pencil (if you want to plan your design)

Step-by-Step Guide

Let’s start making our snowflakes!

  1. Take your square piece of paper. If it’s not square yet, fold one corner over to make a triangle and cut off the extra paper.
  2. Fold the paper in half to make a smaller triangle.
  3. Unfold it to see the crease. This will be your guide.
  4. Fold the lower corner up to the crease and overlap it a bit.
  5. Flip the paper over and do the same on the other side. It should look like a little tulip or fox face.
  6. Fold the whole thing in half again, like an arrow.
  7. Use your pencil to draw your design. Remember to keep the main fold solid, as it will be the snowflake’s main branch.
  8. Carefully cut out your design with scissors. If you make a mistake, don’t worry! It might just make your snowflake more unique.
  9. Unfold your paper carefully to reveal your snowflake!

Enjoy Your Snowflakes!

Now you have a beautiful paper snowflake with six sides, just like real snow crystals. You can hang them on your window, walls, or even from the ceiling. They look great anywhere!

Remember, each snowflake is unique, just like in nature. So, have fun and be creative with your designs. We hope you enjoyed making snowflakes with us. Feel free to send us pictures of your creations!

Thanks for joining us, and see you next time!

  • What do you think makes each snowflake unique, and how does that relate to how people are unique too?
  • Have you ever seen real snowflakes? If so, what did they look like, and how did they make you feel?
  • Can you think of other fun activities you can do with paper? What would you like to create next?
  1. Snowflake Observation Walk: Next time it snows, go outside with an adult and try to catch snowflakes on a dark piece of paper or fabric. Look closely at the snowflakes and see if you can spot the different shapes and patterns. How are they similar to or different from the paper snowflakes you made? Draw a picture of your favorite real snowflake when you get back inside.

  2. Design Your Own Snowflake: Use different types of paper, like colored or patterned paper, to make more snowflakes. Try folding the paper in different ways or cutting different shapes to see how it changes your snowflake. Can you make a snowflake that looks like a star or a heart? Share your creations with your family and ask them which one they like best.

  3. Snowflake Story Time: Imagine that each snowflake you make has a story. Choose one of your paper snowflakes and give it a name. Write a short story or draw a picture about its journey from the clouds to your home. What adventures did it have along the way? Share your story with your friends or family.
