In today’s lesson, Caroline and her friend Sophie guide us through a fun pinata party, where we learn how to create a pinata from a balloon and newspaper strips, decorate it, and fill it with treats. The lesson also introduces new vocabulary words that start with the sounds “brr” and “grr,” and encourages creativity by suggesting various items to fill a pinata. Finally, participants are inspired to host their own pinata parties at home, fostering imagination and hands-on learning.
  1. What are some fun things you can put inside a pinata?
  2. Can you tell me how to make a pinata using a balloon?
  3. What new words did you learn that start with “brr” and “grr” sounds?

Welcome to the Pinata Party!

Hello, friends! Today, we’re going to have a super fun pinata party. I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team, and this is my friend Sophie. Are you ready to join us?

Let’s Make a Pinata!

Our story today is about Ollo and Sandy, who are getting ready for a party. They decide to make a pinata. Here’s how they do it:

  • First, they blow up a balloon to make the shape of the pinata.
  • Next, they dip newspaper strips in glue and cover the balloon with them. It’s sticky and gooey!
  • Once the newspaper is dry, they pop the balloon, leaving a hard shell.
  • They paint the pinata and add some glitter to make it sparkle.
  • Finally, they fill the pinata with candies and plush toys.

Now, it’s time to hang the pinata and start the party!

Breaking the Pinata

Ollo and Sandy invite their friends to try and break the pinata. They use a blindfold and a broomstick to make it more challenging. Everyone takes turns, but it’s not easy! Finally, Peck swings the broom and breaks the pinata, sending treats flying everywhere. Everyone is so happy!

Learning New Words

During the party, we learn some new words that start with the sounds “brr” and “grr.” Here are a few:

  • Brushes – B-R makes the “brr” sound.
  • Broom – Another word with the “brr” sound.
  • Groaned – G-R makes the “grr” sound.
  • Grass – Also starts with the “grr” sound.

How to Make Your Own Pinata

Our friends, teacher Emily, Sadie, and Jager, show us how to make a real pinata. Here’s what you need:

  • 1 cup of glue and 1/2 cup of water
  • A balloon or mold
  • Paper strips
  • Paint and brushes

Mix the glue and water, dip the paper strips in the mixture, and cover the balloon. Once it’s dry, pop the balloon and decorate your pinata. Fill it with treats and toys, and it’s ready to hang!

What Goes Inside a Pinata?

You can put all sorts of fun things inside a pinata, like candies, small toys, stickers, or even fruits like apples and pears. Use your imagination!

Time to Say Goodbye

We hope you enjoyed our pinata party. Maybe you can have your own party at home with your family. If you can’t make a pinata today, you can still collect fun things that might go inside one someday. Thanks for joining us, and see you next time!

  • Have you ever been to a party with a pinata? What was your favorite part about it, and what kind of surprises did you find inside?
  • If you could make your own pinata, what shape would you choose, and what fun things would you put inside for your friends to find?
  • Can you think of other games or activities that you enjoy at parties? How do they make the party more fun for everyone?
  1. Create Your Own Mini Pinata: Gather some small balloons, newspaper strips, glue, and paint. Follow the steps from the article to make a mini pinata. Once it’s dry, decorate it with your favorite colors and fill it with small treats or toys. Share your creation with your family and explain how you made it!

  2. Sound Hunt: Go on a sound hunt around your house or classroom to find objects that start with the “brr” and “grr” sounds. Make a list of the items you find, like “brush” or “grass.” Share your list with a friend and see if they can find more words with the same sounds.

  3. Design a Pinata Party Plan: Imagine you are planning your own pinata party. Draw a picture of what your party would look like. Think about what kind of pinata you would make, what treats you would put inside, and what games you would play. Share your party plan with your family or friends and ask them what they would add to make it even more fun!
