Hello, friends! Today, we’re going to learn how to make a fun “About Me” project using Scratch. Scratch is a cool program where you can create stories, games, and animations. In this project, you’ll get to share fun facts about yourself, like your favorite foods, hobbies, and interests. Let’s get started and make something awesome!
First, let’s add something to your project that tells people about you. In Scratch, we use “sprites” to add characters or objects. Click on the “Choose a Sprite” button and pick something you like. It could be an animal, a favorite food, or something that shows your interests, like a rainbow or a heart.
For example, if you love art, you might choose an easel. If it’s too big, you can make it smaller by changing its size. In this project, when you click on a sprite, it will say something about you. To do this, go to the “Looks” section and find the block that says “Say [Hello] for 2 seconds.” Change “Hello” to something about you, like “I love art!”
To make your sprite say this every time you click on it, go to the “Events” section and find the block that says “When this sprite clicked.” Put it on top of the “Say” block. Now, whenever you click on the sprite, it will say your fun fact!
Next, let’s add a background to your project. Click on “Choose a Backdrop” and pick one you like. You can also add a title to your project. To do this, create a new sprite by clicking “Paint” and use the text tool to write “About Me.” You can change the color of your text and even draw a rectangle behind it to make it stand out.
Let’s add another sprite that shows something else about you. Pick a sprite you like and make it say something when clicked. For example, if you like hedgehogs, choose a hedgehog sprite and make it say, “I want a pet hedgehog.” You can also make it move by using the “Next Costume” block in the “Looks” section.
If you want to add something that doesn’t have a sprite, like your favorite food, you can upload an image. Click on “Choose a Sprite” and select “Upload” to add a picture from your computer.
You can also make your sprites play sounds when clicked. Choose a sprite, like a soccer ball, and make it say, “I like playing soccer.” To add a sound, go to the “Sound” section and use the “Start Sound” block. Most sprites come with sounds, but you can choose your own from the sounds tab.
To make your sprite move, go to the “Motion” section and use the “Turn 15 degrees” block. Attach it to the other blocks, and now your sprite will turn when clicked!
Now you know how to create your own “About Me” project in Scratch! You can add as many fun facts and sprites as you like. I can’t wait to see what you create. Have fun and happy scratching!
Create a Real-Life “About Me” Poster: Use a large piece of paper or cardboard to make a poster about yourself. Draw or cut out pictures from magazines that represent your favorite foods, hobbies, and interests. Write a sentence about each picture, just like you did with the sprites in Scratch. Share your poster with your family or friends and explain why you chose each picture.
Observe and Share: Spend a day observing things around you that could be turned into sprites in Scratch. For example, notice the animals you see, the food you eat, or the activities you enjoy. Make a list of these observations and think about what each sprite would say if you clicked on it. Share your list with a classmate and see if they have similar ideas.
Sprite Storytelling: With a friend or family member, create a short story using your Scratch sprites. Each person can choose a sprite and make it say something to continue the story. For example, if one sprite says, “I love ice cream,” the next sprite might say, “Let’s have an ice cream party!” Take turns adding to the story and see where your imagination takes you!
Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript, removing any personal identifiers and ensuring it maintains a general tone suitable for all audiences:

Hi, everyone! It’s Zoë from the Scratch team. Today, I wanted to show you how to create an “About Me” project in Scratch. You might have seen these kinds of projects before, where people share facts about themselves, their favorite foods, hobbies, and interests. By the end of this video, you’ll know how to make your own project that reflects who you are, and you can design it however you like. Let’s get started!
First, let’s add an item to your project that describes something about you. Click on the button that says “Choose a Sprite” and select “Choose.” You can pick any object or character you want. For example, you could add an animal you like or a favorite food. You could also choose something that represents your interests, like a rainbow or a heart if you enjoy making people happy.
For my project, I really like art, so I will add an easel. Since it’s a bit large, I’ll decrease the size of the sprite by clicking here and typing in a new size. In this project, when you click on an item, it will say a fact about you. To do this, go to the “Looks” category, drag out the block that says “Say [Hello] for 2 seconds,” and type in the fact you want the object to say. I will type, “I like art.” To test it out, click on this block. There you go! The item says that.
Now, to make it so the easel says this every time the player clicks on it, go to the “Events” category and drag out a “When this sprite clicked” block and place it on top. Now, whenever you click on the sprite, it will say, “I like art.”
Next, let’s add a backdrop. Hover over “Choose a Backdrop,” click “Choose,” and pick any backdrop you like for your project. I like the heart backdrop, so I will use that one. You can also add a title to your project that says “About Me.” To do this, I will create a title sprite by hovering over “Choose a Sprite” and clicking “Paint.” Then, I can use the text tool to type “About [Your Username].”
It’s important to use your username instead of your real name. You can change the color of the text if you want. I’ll make mine dark purple. To make the text stand out against the backdrop, you can draw a rectangle behind it. Since my text is dark, I’ll draw a light rectangle. Click on the rectangle tool, set the color to white, and draw the rectangle behind the text.
Make sure that if your text is dark, the rectangle behind it is light, and vice versa. This helps ensure readability for everyone, including those with visual disabilities.
Now, let’s add another sprite to your project and create an animation. Choose a sprite that connects to something about you. I like hedgehogs, so I will pick the hedgehog sprite. Just like with the easel, I’ll make it say, “I want a pet hedgehog,” and I will make it say this when the sprite is clicked.
To animate it, go to the “Looks” category and find the “Next Costume” block. If you click on it, it will change the sprite’s pose to the next one it has. Now, when the hedgehog sprite is clicked, it will say, “I want a pet hedgehog,” and also animate to the next costume.
If you want to add something that doesn’t have a sprite available, like a favorite food, you can upload an image. Click on “Choose a Sprite” and select “Upload.” If you have a picture of that item on your computer, you can upload it.
Now, let’s say you want a sprite that plays a sound when clicked. Choose another sprite. I enjoy playing soccer, so I’ll add a soccer ball and make it say, “I like playing soccer” when clicked. To make it play a sound, go to the “Sound” category and drag out the “Start Sound” block. Place a “When this sprite clicked” block on top of that. Now, when I click on the sprite, it will play the sound that comes with it.
Most sprites in Scratch come with sounds, but you can also choose your own sound from the sounds tab. You can select any sound you want and attach it to your sprite.
You can also make the sprite turn when clicked by going to the “Motion” category and dragging out a “Turn 15 degrees” block, attaching it to the previous block.
With this, you can create your own unique “About Me” project with any random facts about yourself. The starter code I made for this project will be in the description below, so you can open it up and remix it. I can’t wait to see your “About Me” projects! See you next time, and happy scratching!
