In today’s Circle Time lesson with Caroline and Sophie, children learned about the fun and simple process of planting seeds, including the necessary materials like seeds, soil, and water. They explored the concept of seeds found in everyday fruits and enjoyed a story about a girl named Reya who faces challenges while planting bean seeds. The lesson also included a phonics component, focusing on words with the long “e” sound, and encouraged kids to get creative by planting seeds at home and drawing their growth.
  1. What do you need to plant a seed?
  2. Can you name a fruit that has seeds inside it?
  3. What happens to the seed after you plant it and water it?

Welcome to Circle Time with Caroline and Sophie!

Hello, friends! Today, we’re going to learn about planting seeds with Caroline and her friend Sophie from the Khan Academy Kids team. Planting seeds is a fun way to bring a bit of nature inside your home. Let’s get started!

What You Need to Plant a Seed

To plant a seed, you’ll need a few things: some seeds, pots, soil, and water. Caroline has some African Daisy seeds, which will grow into beautiful flowers. Sophie loves to grow herbs like chives, basil, and cilantro. These plants grow quickly if you give them good soil, enough space, and water them regularly.

Seeds in Everyday Foods

Did you know that many fruits have seeds inside them? Apples, oranges, lemons, pears, and even peppers have seeds that can grow into trees or bushes. Next time you eat a fruit, think about the seeds inside and how they could grow into a new plant!

Reading “Plant a Seed” by Cynthia Platt

Caroline and Sophie read a book called “Plant a Seed” by Cynthia Platt. In the story, Reya wants to plant bean seeds but faces challenges like snails and beetles that want to eat her seeds. With the help of her friend Peck, Reya plants the seeds, waters them, and waits patiently. Soon, the seeds grow into bean plants, and Reya and Peck enjoy the beans together.

Learning About Long E Sounds

While reading, Caroline and Sophie also teach us about words with the long “e” sound, like “bean,” “seeds,” and “beetle.” These words have the “ee” or “ea” combination that makes the long “e” sound.

Planting a Seed with Teacher Sarah

Teacher Sarah shows us how to plant a seed in her garden. You only need three things: a seed, soil, and water. You can buy seeds from the store or use seeds from fruits like lemons or apples. If you don’t have a pot, you can use a container from your kitchen, like a yogurt cup.

To plant the seed, make a small hole in the soil, put the seed inside, and cover it gently. Water the seed a little and place the pot in a sunny spot. Be patient, as it might take a few days for the seed to sprout. As it grows, you’ll see roots, a stem, and leaves. With care, your plant might even bloom into a flower!

Get Creative with Seeds

Caroline and Sophie encourage you to try planting a seed at home. You can also draw a picture of a seed growing into a plant. If you do, ask a grown-up to send a picture of your drawing to share with others!

Thank you for joining Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids team today. We hope you enjoyed learning about planting seeds. See you next time!

  1. Have you ever planted a seed before? What kind of plant did you try to grow, and what happened to it?
  2. Think about your favorite fruit. Can you imagine what it would be like to plant its seeds and watch them grow? What do you think you would need to do to take care of the plant?
  3. In the story “Plant a Seed,” Reya faced challenges with snails and beetles. Can you think of any challenges you might face when growing a plant? How would you solve them?
  1. Seed Observation Journal: Start a seed observation journal. Plant a seed in a small pot or container, just like Teacher Sarah showed you. Every day, draw a picture of what your seed looks like. Write down any changes you see, like when the seed starts to sprout or when leaves appear. Ask yourself questions like: What do you think the seed needs to grow? How does the plant change each day?

  2. Seed Hunt: Go on a seed hunt in your kitchen! With the help of a grown-up, look for seeds in the fruits and vegetables you have at home. Can you find seeds in an apple, a lemon, or a pepper? Try planting one of these seeds in a pot and see if it grows. Think about why some seeds might grow better than others. What do you notice about the seeds you find?

  3. Long E Sound Game: Play a word game with a friend or family member. Take turns thinking of words with the long “e” sound, like “tree,” “leaf,” or “beetle.” Write them down and see how many you can come up with. Can you find any words with the long “e” sound in the book “Plant a Seed” by Cynthia Platt? Try to use these words in a sentence about planting seeds.
