share us on:

In this lesson on how-to writing, we focus on crafting an effective introduction that captures the reader’s interest, clearly presents the topic, and lists the necessary materials. The introduction should start with a hook, such as a thought-provoking question, followed by a statement about what the reader will learn, and conclude with a brief inventory of items needed to get started. An example introduction for a guide on growing a plant is provided to illustrate these key components.
  1. What is one way you can make your reader interested in your writing?
  2. What topic would you like to teach someone about, and why?
  3. Can you list three things you would need to start your how-to project?

How-To Writing: Episode 2 – Writing an Introduction

In this episode, we are going to learn about how-to writing. This is a special way to teach others how to do something fun or useful. First, I thought about all the things I know how to do. Then, I picked a topic that I am good at and want to share with you. Today, I will show you how to grow a plant!

Let’s Start with the Introduction

The introduction is the beginning of your writing. It should do three important things:

  1. Hook the Reader: Make the reader interested in what you have to say.
  2. Introduce the Topic: Clearly tell what you will be teaching.
  3. List the Materials Needed: Give a quick list of what you need to get started.

How to Hook the Reader

To make the reader curious, I like to start with a question. For example, I might ask, “Have you ever seen a beautiful flower and thought, ‘I would like to have a flower like that!’?”

Introducing the Topic

Next, I will tell you what we are going to learn. I might say, “Read this book to learn all about how to grow your own plant!”

Listing the Materials

Finally, I will tell you what you need to grow a plant: a pot, soil, seeds, a small shovel, and a watering can.

Putting It All Together

Here is how my introduction sounds when I put everything together: “Have you ever seen a beautiful flower and thought, ‘I would like to have a flower like that!’? Read this book to learn all about how to grow your own plant. You will need a pot, soil, seeds, a small shovel, and a watering can!”

Great job! Stay tuned for Episode 3, where I will start explaining the steps in my how-to guide!

  • Have you ever tried to grow a plant or help someone else grow one? What was it like, and what did you learn from the experience?
  • Can you think of something you know how to do really well? How would you introduce it to someone who has never done it before?
  • Why do you think it’s important to list the materials needed when teaching someone how to do something? Can you think of a time when you forgot something important?
  1. Create Your Own How-To Introduction: Think of something you know how to do really well, like making a sandwich or tying your shoes. Write a short introduction for your how-to guide. Remember to hook the reader with a fun question, introduce your topic, and list the materials needed. Share your introduction with a friend or family member and see if they can guess what you will teach them!

  2. Observation Walk: Go on a short walk around your garden, backyard, or a nearby park. Look for different plants and flowers. Choose one that you find interesting and imagine you are going to write a how-to guide about growing it. What materials would you need? What question could you ask to hook your reader? Share your ideas with your class or family.

  3. Materials Hunt: At home, gather the materials needed to grow a plant as mentioned in the article: a pot, soil, seeds, a small shovel, and a watering can. Arrange them in a creative way and take a picture. Use this picture to help you write a fun introduction for your how-to guide. Try to make your introduction so exciting that others will want to start planting right away!

**How-To Writing: Episode 2 – Writing an Introduction**

In this episode, we explore how-to writing, which is a method used to teach others how to do something. First, I brainstormed various skills I possess. Then, I selected a topic that I am knowledgeable about and would like to share with others. Today, I will teach you how to grow a plant!

Now, let’s dive into writing the introduction. An introduction serves as the beginning of your piece and should accomplish three key objectives:

1. **Hook the Reader:** This is essential to capture the reader’s interest.
2. **Introduce the Topic:** Clearly state what you will be teaching.
3. **List the Materials Needed:** Provide a brief overview of what is required.

To hook the reader, I like to start with a question. For example, I might ask, “Have you ever seen a beautiful flower and thought, ‘I would like to have a flower like that!’?”

Next, I will introduce the topic by stating, “Read this book to learn all about how to grow your own plant!”

Finally, I will list the materials needed: a pot, soil, seeds, a small shovel, and a watering can.

Putting it all together, my introduction sounds like this: “Have you ever seen a beautiful flower and thought, ‘I would like to have a flower like that!’? Read this book to learn all about how to grow your own plant. You will need a pot, soil, seeds, a small shovel, and a watering can!”

Perfect! Stay tuned for Episode 3, where I will begin outlining the steps in my how-to guide!
