In today’s Storytime lesson, we explored two delightful stories: “I Am an Artist” by Martha Altez, which celebrates creativity and the unique perspective of a young artist, and “Mr. Patches is Bored,” where a cat discovers that boredom can lead to exciting adventures and new friendships. Both stories encourage children to embrace their creativity and find joy in exploration, reminding us that every day can be special with a little imagination.
  1. What do you think it means to be an artist like the little boy in the story?
  2. How did Mr. Patches find fun when he was bored?
  3. Can you tell me about a time when you made something special, like the little artist did for his mom?

Welcome to Storytime!

Hello, everyone! How are you today? Did you have a fun day? Maybe now you’re ready to enjoy a story with us. Today, we have a book called “I Am an Artist” by Martha Altez. Let’s dive in!

I Am an Artist

In this story, there’s a little artist who sees art everywhere! He thinks his mom is an artist too, but in a different way. When he looks at a carrot, he sees art, but his mom sees dinner. When he sees a window, his mom sees a hole. Even if his mom doesn’t always understand, he loves to create!

He makes lots of art, like blue number 10, 11, and 12. He even makes a picture of himself and calls it “Spring in Winter.” He loves colors, shapes, and everything around him.

But there’s a little problem. His mom doesn’t seem happy. So, he decides to make a special piece of art just for her. He plans it carefully and can’t wait for her to see it. Do you think she’ll like it?

Are you an artist too? Do you like to draw or paint at home? It’s fun to create, isn’t it?

Meet Mr. Patches!

Now, let’s meet Mr. Patches, a cat who gets bored sometimes. Do you ever feel bored? Let’s see what Mr. Patches does when he’s bored.

Mr. Patches is Bored

Mr. Patches is a cat who feels bored when he’s alone. He’s soft, cuddly, and very talented, but he wants more fun in his life.

Every day feels the same for Mr. Patches, so he decides to find some excitement. He goes on adventures all week long!

  • On Monday, he plays with foxes.
  • On Tuesday, he rides a moose!
  • On Wednesday, he climbs a tree and needs help to get down.
  • On Thursday, he rides a bike with a dog named Spike.
  • On Friday, he digs underground with a map.
  • On Saturday, he wins a prize at the fair.
  • On Sunday, he visits the zoo to see a fish.

After all his adventures, Mr. Patches learns that being bored isn’t so bad. It helped him find new friends and have fun. Now he knows that sometimes being bored can lead to exciting things!

Have you ever been bored? What fun things do you like to do when you’re bored?

Thanks for joining us for these stories! We hope you had fun. Remember, being creative and going on adventures can make any day special. See you next time!

  • What kinds of things do you see around you that you think could be turned into art, just like the little artist in the story?
  • Mr. Patches went on many adventures when he was bored. Can you think of a fun adventure you would like to go on if you ever feel bored?
  • Have you ever made something special for someone you care about, like the little artist did for his mom? How did it make you feel?
  1. Art Hunt: Go on a mini-adventure around your home or classroom to find everyday objects that you think could be turned into art. Look for things like leaves, buttons, or even a spoon. Once you’ve collected a few items, use them to create your own masterpiece. Share your artwork with your friends and explain why you chose those objects.

  2. Color and Shape Exploration: Take a walk outside and observe the different colors and shapes you see in nature. Can you find something that is a circle, a square, or a triangle? What colors do you see in the sky, on the ground, or in the trees? Draw a picture of what you saw and use your favorite colors to make it come alive.

  3. Storytime Adventure: Just like Mr. Patches, think of a fun adventure you would like to go on. Draw a picture of your adventure and write a short story about it. Who would you meet? What fun things would you do? Share your story with your class and see if they have any ideas for more adventures.

Hi everyone! Welcome back to Storytime Family. How are you doing today? Did you have a busy day, a slow day, or maybe a relaxing day? Perhaps now you’re ready to sit down and read a book with us. Today we have a book called “I Am an Artist” by Martha Altez. Let’s check it out, shall we?

“I Am an Artist”

I am an artist. So is my mom, but in a very different way. Everywhere I look, I see art, but I don’t think my mom always sees it. Where I see the loneliness of the carrot, my mom sees an unfinished dinner. Where I see a window to the world, my mom sees a hole in the wall. I don’t think she understands me, but I can’t stop creating.

Some of my finest pieces of art this week are blue number 10, blue number 11, and blue number 12. This one is my multiple self-portrait, and I think I’ll call this one “Spring in Winter.” I am so talented; I just can’t help it! Everything inspires me. I love nature, colors, movement, textures, and shapes.

But there’s just one problem: my mom. I think maybe something is wrong. Perhaps I haven’t given her enough attention. There must be something I can do to make her feel better. Hmm…

I know! I’m going to make her an amazing piece of art, especially for her, but it will need plenty of careful planning. I can’t wait for her to wake up. I hope she likes it! Oh my, I am sure mom would be super delighted, don’t you think?

So that was “I Am an Artist.” Tell me, are you an artist? Do you do some of the work that this little guy does in your house, on your walls, or furniture? Maybe it was fun when you were doing it, right?

Today we have “Mr. Patches is Bored” by Nick Schonfeld. Are you bored? Let’s find out if you’re as bored as Mr. Patches.

Mr. Patches is bored for bored cats everywhere. Before we begin, here’s the thing you should know: I know all cats are amazing as far as cats go. They’re soft and cuddly, nimble and quick, with hair long or short and with tails that they flick.

But here’s a fact you might not have known: cats can get bored when they’re left all alone, like this cat right here. He’s as bored as he looks; he’s got nothing to watch and he’s read all his books.

Now can you guess his name? Do you know what it is? It is Patches the cat, and this story is his. Mr. Patches, you see, is not run of the mill. He catches his mice with incredible skill. His first exquisite, his whiskers they gleam. His meows are like music, his purring supreme.

But even this cat with his talents galore begins each new day thinking life is a chore. Every morning I wake, I sit, then I eat. Then I take a long nap, then I lick clean my feet. My pillow’s too soft; this cat and mouse game, I’m bored of it all. It’s too much of the same. My days are so long, and it makes me so sad. Where are the adventures that I’ve never had?

Enough is enough; this is getting me down. Let’s look for excitement in my little town. For the whole of this week, I will play and have a blast, meet new friends, and let it rip!

Out the door he didn’t walk; with his cart on his heels, a week of adventures—let’s see how that feels!

On Monday, he played with the Archibald foxes.

On Tuesday, he went riding out on the range with a big pair of boots on a moose for a change.

On Wednesday, he climbed to the top of a tree and needed three firemen to help set him free.

On Thursday, he rented a shiny new bike and flew through the air with a big dog named Spike.

On Friday, he studied a map he had found and spent the whole day digging deep underground.

On Saturday, he prepped for the big county fair, where he won the first prize for cat with a stare.

Then Sunday saw him get his ultimate wish: to go to the zoo and look at a fish.

His week of excitement had come to an end. Mr. Patches had made adventure his friend. He skipped and hopped, and then home he returned, his little red cart filled with things he had earned.

“Look at all my adventures; they sure weigh a ton! What a great time I’ve had; it has been so much fun! But now that I’m home, will I be bored again? If I just sit and eat and do nothing, what then?”

Yet here is a fact that cannot be ignored: I would not have gone out if I had not been bored. Being bored got me friends, brought me joy, set me free. Boredom is not bad; it is good! Now I see if I had not been bored, there’d be no need to roam, and it wouldn’t feel good to then finally come home.

So I’m glad I was bored, per young meow, but I’m done with adventures, at least for now.
