What’s the Weather Like?

Is it sunny or rainy where you are? Here, it’s summer, and we’re excited about the warm weather!

Meet Bat!

Today, we’re reading a story called “I Am Bat” by Morag Hood. Let’s see what Bat has to say!

Bat’s Favorite Treat

Bat doesn’t like mornings, but Bat loves cherries! They are red, juicy, and super yummy. Bat says, “Don’t take my cherries, or I’ll be as fierce as a little lion with wings!”

Oh No, Where Are the Cherries?

Some cherries are missing! Bat wonders, “Who took my cherries? Was it you?” But wait, Bat finds a pear and decides, “I like pears too!”

Meet Mr. Patches the Cat!

Now, let’s hear about Mr. Patches, a cat who was feeling very bored.

All About Cats

Cats are amazing! They’re soft, quick, and have tails that flick. But did you know cats can get bored too?

Mr. Patches’ Adventures

Mr. Patches was bored, so he decided to have a week full of fun adventures!

  • On Monday, he played with foxes and became the king of a box castle!
  • On Tuesday, he wore big boots and rode a moose!
  • On Wednesday, he climbed a tree and needed help to get down!
  • On Thursday, he rode a bike with a dog named Spike!
  • On Friday, he dug deep underground with a map!
  • On Saturday, he won a prize at the fair for having the best hair!
  • On Sunday, he visited the zoo and saw a fish!
What Did Mr. Patches Learn?

After all his adventures, Mr. Patches learned that being bored isn’t so bad. It helped him find new friends and have lots of fun!

Have You Ever Been Bored?

Sometimes being bored can help us think of new and exciting things to do. What fun adventures can you imagine?

Thank You for Joining Us!

We hope you enjoyed our stories today. Remember, being creative can turn boredom into something amazing! Take care, and see you next time!

  • What is your favorite treat, just like Bat loves cherries? Why do you like it so much?
  • Have you ever felt bored like Mr. Patches? What fun things did you do to make your day exciting?
  • If you could have an adventure like Mr. Patches, what would you do and who would you like to join you?
  1. Cherry Hunt: Just like Bat loves cherries, let’s go on a cherry hunt! Ask an adult to hide some red objects (they can be anything small and safe) around the room or garden. Pretend these are cherries and try to find them all. How many can you find? Can you find something else you like, just like Bat found the pear?

  2. Mr. Patches’ Adventure Map: Create your own adventure map like Mr. Patches! Draw a map of your house or yard and plan an adventure for each day of the week. What fun things can you do in each place? Maybe you can be the king or queen of a pillow fort or ride a pretend moose using a broomstick!

  3. Weather Watch: Look outside and observe the weather. Is it sunny, rainy, or cloudy? Draw a picture of what you see. Then, think about what kind of adventure you could have in this weather. Would you play in the sun, splash in puddles, or watch the clouds? Share your ideas with a friend or family member!

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Hello everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime Family. How are you today? I hope you’ve been keeping well.

How’s the weather where you are? I hope you’re staying warm and cozy. We are in the southern hemisphere, and we just entered summer, which we’ve been looking forward to all year.

Thank you for taking the time to sit down and read with us today. We have “I Am Bat” by Morag Hood. Let’s take a look!

I am Bat. I do not like mornings. I like cherries; they are my favorite of all things. They are juicy, red, and delicious, and they are mine! Do not take my cherries. If you take my cherries, I will be angry. I will be ferocious like a lion, but smaller with wings. I will just leave my cherries here; do not touch them. I will know if you take one of my cherries.

Some of them are missing. Where did they go? Who stole my cherries? Was it you? My poor cherries! I will never be happy again.

Oh, a pear! I like pears. I am Bat. Do not take my pear.

And that was “I Am Bat.” That was pretty short and sweet! If you’d like to own a copy of this book, the links are in the description below.

Are you bored? Let’s find out if you’re as bored as Mr. Patches. Mr. Patches is bored—for bored cats everywhere.

Before we begin, here’s something you should know: all cats are amazing! They’re soft and cuddly, nimble and quick, with hair long or short and tails that flick.

But here’s a fact you might not have known: cats can get bored when they’re left all alone, like this cat right here. He’s as bored as he looks; he’s got nothing to watch and he’s read all his books.

Now, can you guess his name? Do you know what it is? It is Patches the Cat, and this story is his.

Mr. Patches, you see, is not run of the mill. He catches his mice with incredible skill. His fur is exquisite, his whiskers they gleam, his meows are like music, his purring supreme.

But even this cat, with his talents galore, begins each new day thinking life is a chore.

Every morning I wake, I sit, then I eat, then I take a long nap, then I lick clean my feet. My pillow’s too soft. Ugh, this cat-and-mouse game! I’m bored of it all; it’s too much of the same.

My days are so long, and it makes me so sad. Where are the adventures that I’ve never had? Enough is enough; this is getting me down. Let’s look for excitement in my little town.

For the whole of this week, I’ll give boredom the slip. I will play, have a blast, meet new friends, and let it rip!

Out the door, he didn’t walk with his cart on his heels. A week of adventures—let’s see how that feels!

On Monday, he played with the Archibald foxes.

Now I am the king of this castle of boxes!

On Tuesday, he went riding out on the range with a big pair of boots on a moose for a change.

[Applause]

On Wednesday, he climbed to the top of a tree, and he needed three firemen to help set him free.

On Thursday, he rented a shiny new bike and flew through the air with a big dog named Spike.

On Friday, he studied a map he had found and spent the whole day digging deep underground.

On Saturday, he prepped for the big county fair, where he won first prize for a cat with the best hair.

Then Sunday saw him get his ultimate wish: to go to the zoo and to look at a fish.

[Applause]

His week of excitement had come to an end. Mr. Patches had made adventure his friend. He skipped and he hopped, and then home he returned, his little red cart filled with things he had earned.

Look at all my adventures; they sure weigh a ton! What a great time I’ve had; it has been so much fun!

But now that I’m home, won’t I be bored again if I just sit and eat and do nothing? What then?

Yet there is a fact that cannot be ignored: I would not have gone out if I had not been bored.

Being bored got me friends, brought me joy, set me free. Boredom is not bad; it is good! Now I see.

If I had not been bored, there’d be no need to roam, and it wouldn’t feel good to then finally come home.

So I’m glad I was bored.

Purr, yawn, meow. But I’m done with adventures, at least for now.

I hope you enjoyed “Mr. Patches is Bored.” Have you ever been bored? Being bored is actually a good thing because then you get creative, right?
