  2. Can you think of three things you are grateful for today?
  3. How does being grateful make you feel inside?

Welcome to Storytime!

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime Family. How are you today? Are you having lots of fun at school, playing with your friends, and learning new things? I hope you’re being good to your teachers and kind to your parents. Thank you for reading with us!

I Love My Granny

Today, we have a story called “I Love My Granny” by Andrew and Emma Dodd. Let’s dive in!

I love my granny! If you have a granny, you are so lucky! My granny thinks I’m great too. She’s like a mom, but she has lots of time to spend with me. I visit her house to play, and sometimes we just chat all day. She knows so many things because she’s been around for a long time!

Granny loves the photos Mommy sends and shows them to all her friends. She takes me out for special treats and sometimes buys us sweets. We ride on trains and buses and have adventures! We play fun games and give each other silly names. We love to cook and bake and eat the yummy things we make. We watch my favorite shows on TV and snuggle up together.

Granny has a comfy tummy that she says is funny. When it’s time to say goodbye, she sighs and says, “It’s nice to give you back to Mom after all the fun we’ve had.” I hope your granny is just like mine; we have the best time!

I hope you enjoyed “I Love My Granny” and that you’re showing your granny lots of love. If you liked this book, you can find links to buy it below. Don’t forget to subscribe for more stories like this. We love hearing from you!

Gratitude is My Superpower

Next, we have “Gratitude is My Superpower” by Alicia Ortega. Do you know what gratitude is? Let’s find out!

Every day, I am grateful for many things: the sun that warms us, the birds that sing, my family and friends, and the books I read. I’m grateful for raindrops, rainbows, trees, flowers, and even the first snow. I’m grateful for my little readers and their parents too!

Hi, my name is Betsy, and this is Mr. T. I’m seven, and he’s seventy! He never seems to age. One day, I felt sad while playing with him.

“What’s wrong?” Mom asked. “You’re usually so happy.” I said, “It’s Mr. T. I think carrying his house all day must be hard. He never runs or jumps like me.”

“Don’t worry,” Mom said. “Mr. T is fine. Turtles are different. They like to hide in their shells. Mr. T is grateful for everything he has, so he doesn’t worry about what he doesn’t have.”

“Let’s play a game,” Mom said. “It’s called gratitude. It’ll help you understand Mr. T. Are you ready?” Mom took me to the garden and picked up a stone. “This stone has superpowers. When you’re upset, hold it and think of things to be grateful for. It will help you see things differently.”

When it started raining, I felt sad. But then I remembered my stone and thought about how rain helps plants grow and rivers flow. “Thank you, rain!” I said.

The next morning, I didn’t want to go to school. But I remembered my friends and my teacher, Mrs. Blaine. At school, I forgot it was Sibling Day. I don’t have siblings, but I was grateful for Mr. T.

At dinner, I didn’t like my meal, but I remembered how lucky I am to have food. At bedtime, I was grateful for my cozy bed and my turtle PJs. I realized I didn’t need the stone to feel grateful. “Mom!” I shouted. “I did gratitude on my own!”

“Of course you did,” Mom said. “Gratitude is in your heart.” She placed her hand on my heart and stroked my hair. “It’s in all of us. We just need to stop and think about what we’re thankful for.”

The next day, I met a new boy who was sad about moving. I told him about the gratitude stone. He thought for a moment and smiled. “I’m thankful for my new home with a big garden!”

Now, I always carry a stone to remind me to be grateful. I share my story with others. “Mom, I’m grateful for Betsy and Dad. Betsy, I’m grateful for my teacher and my doll. Mr. T, I’m grateful to live with Betsy.”

Alicia Ortega says, “I’m grateful for my readers and their parents. The more we share gratitude, the happier we’ll be. Will you share this story too?”

Here’s a fun activity: find a stone and carry it for five days. Each evening, write down three things you’re thankful for. What are you grateful for?

We have so much to be grateful for! Life is beautiful. Be thankful, and everything will fall into place.

I hope you enjoyed “Gratitude is My Superpower.” The more grateful you are, the more you’ll have in life. Thank you for reading with us today! If you liked this story, give us a like and subscribe for more. Links to buy the book are below.

  1. Think about your own granny or someone special in your life. What are some fun activities you like to do together? How do they make you feel?
  2. In the story “Gratitude is My Superpower,” Betsy learns to be thankful for many things. Can you think of three things you are grateful for today? Why do those things make you happy?
  3. Imagine you have a gratitude stone like Betsy. What would you tell a friend about how it helps you feel better when you’re sad? Can you think of a time when being thankful made you feel happier?
  1. Granny Adventure Map: Create a map of your neighborhood or a place you visit with your granny. Use crayons or markers to draw the places you go together, like the park, the bakery, or the bus stop. Add little drawings of the fun activities you do, like baking or watching TV. Share your map with your family and tell them a story about your adventures with granny!

  2. Gratitude Stone Hunt: Go on a nature walk with your family and find a special stone. Once you find your stone, decorate it with paint or markers. Each day, hold your stone and think of three things you are grateful for, just like Betsy did in the story. Share your gratitude thoughts with your family at dinner or bedtime.

  3. Granny’s Recipe Book: Ask your granny or a family member to share a simple recipe that you can make together. Write down the recipe in a special notebook and decorate the page with drawings of the ingredients. Try making the recipe with your family and enjoy the delicious results. Talk about why cooking with loved ones is special and how it makes you feel grateful.

Next, we have “Gratitude is My Superpower” by Alicia Ortega. Do you know what gratitude is? Well, let’s find out!

Every day, I am grateful for so many things: for the sun that warms and the bird that sings. I am grateful for my family and friends, for the books that I write and for my pens. I’m grateful for the raindrops and beautiful rainbows, for the trees and flowers, and for the first snow. I’m grateful for my little readers and their parents too; that’s why I dedicated this book to you.

Hi, my name is Betsy, and this is Mr. T. I’m only seven, but he is seventy! You wouldn’t know to look at him; he never seems to age. He slowly moves around the house and doesn’t have a cage. One day when I was playing with him, I suddenly felt quite sad.

“What’s the matter?” Mom said. “You’re usually so glad.” “It’s Mr. T,” I said to her. “I think there’s something wrong. To carry that big house all day, he has to be so strong. Do you think it stops him from having fun like me? I’ve never seen him run or jump as happy as can be.”

“Oh my dear, you mustn’t worry. Mr. T is fine. Turtles have different needs in life; they’re not like yours or mine. The nature of a turtle is harmless, quiet, and shy. They love to hide inside their shells when people pass them by. Mr. T is very grateful for everything he’s got, which means he doesn’t worry about things he has not.”

“Let’s play a game together,” Mom said. “I call it gratitude. It’ll help you understand Mr. T. Are you in the mood?” Mom takes me to the garden, and just behind the flowers, picking up a stone, she says, “This has superpowers. Every time you’re upset when things don’t go as planned, you take out your gratitude stone and hold it in your hand. The stone will work its magic, and soon you’ll begin to see everything that’s happening is how it’s meant to be.”

No sooner had we gone inside than the sky began to rain. Tears began to fill my eyes; I wanted to go out again. Remembering my special stone, I squeezed it with all my might. What could I be grateful for when rain was in my sight? But just then I remembered: without it, plants will grow, fish wouldn’t live in the sea, and rivers wouldn’t flow. “Thank you for raining; you’re really rather clever. Now I know the job you do; you can rain whenever!”

The next morning when it’s time to wake, my body is filled with dread. Going to school is the last thing I want; I’d rather stay home instead. Beneath my pillow is my stone; I squeeze it once again, remembering the friends at school and my teacher, Mrs. Blaine.

At school, I forgot today was Sibling Day. I don’t have any siblings, so I didn’t know what to say. My stone will have the answer, I thought; I’ll squeeze it and we’ll see. Of course, I said I’m grateful because I have Mr. T.

At dinner time, it worked again when Mom put down my plate. No yummy cake, but rice and veggies, which I didn’t appreciate. But then I remembered the children who aren’t as lucky as me to have a healthy, warm meal cooked by their mommy.

At bedtime, when I’m not tired, I want to play instead. I’m grateful for my turtle, PJs, and a warm, cozy bed. But just then I remember I’m not even carrying the stone. “Mom!” I shout. “I did gratitude, and I did it on my own!”

“Of course you did, my darling, because gratitude is in there upon your heart.” She places her hand on my heart, and with the other, she strokes my hair. “So gratitude is in all of us,” I said, “and all we have to do is stop and think how thankful we are instead of feeling blue.”

The next day during playtime, there is a new boy there with shiny braces on his teeth and curly light brown hair. Tears are falling down his face; he wished he had not moved—a decision made by his parents that he did not approve.

I tell him of the gratitude stone and ask if we can find something to be thankful for that he can bear in mind. He holds the stone and thinks a minute, and I smile across his face. “I’m thankful for a new home; the garden has so much space!”

Now every time I go out, I make sure to have with me at least one stone to pass on along with my story. “Mom, I’m grateful to have Betsy and my husband Bob. Dad, I’m grateful to have a family, a house, and my job. Betsy, I’m grateful to have a lovely teacher and a Barbie doll. Mr. T, I’m grateful to live with Betsy instead of at the zoo.”

Alicia Ortega: “I am grateful for my little readers and their parents too. Leo, I’m grateful to have football boots and a soccer ball. The more we share about gratitude, the happier we will be. Will you share this story and help other children like me?”

And here is the five days of gratitude journal for kids: find a nice stone and carry it for five days with you to remind you to be thankful. In the evening, write three things you could be thankful for during this day. “I am thankful for this person, this place, this hobby, this thing, this food.” What are you grateful for?

We all have so much to be grateful for; we’re so lucky! Think about all the things you get to enjoy and do every day. Life is a beautiful thing; wake up and appreciate it. Be thankful for it, and everything will just fall into place.

I hope you enjoyed “Gratitude is My Superpower” because gratitude is indeed a superpower. The more grateful you are, the more you will have in your life.
