In today’s Circle Time Fun lesson, Caroline and her friend Sophie engaged children with singing, dancing, and interactive storytelling. They read “Old Friends, New Friends,” which taught the importance of inclusion and trying new things, followed by games that reinforced the story’s themes and encouraged creativity and teamwork. The session concluded with fun guessing games and a warm farewell, leaving everyone excited for the next gathering.
  1. What did we do to have fun during Circle Time?
  2. How did Mouse feel when she met Toad, and what did they do to feel better?
  3. What games did we play with our friends today?

Welcome to Circle Time Fun!

Hello, friends! I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team, and I’m so happy to see you here today. I’m joined by my friend Sophie. Hi, Sophie!

Let’s Sing and Dance!

Today, we’re going to have a lot of fun. We’ll sing a song, read a book, and play some games. First, let’s welcome Caitie from Super Simple and Caitie’s Classroom. Hi, Caitie!

Caitie is here to sing a song with us. Are you ready to clap your hands, stomp your feet, and shout “Hooray”? Let’s sing together!

We sang “If You’re Happy and You Know It,” and it was so much fun! We clapped, stomped, and even did some jumping and spinning. Singing and dancing always make us feel happy!

Story Time: Old Friends, New Friends

Now, let’s read a book called “Old Friends, New Friends” by Cynthia Platt. It’s about Scorpion and Mouse, who are best friends. One day, they meet a new friend, Toad. At first, Mouse feels a little left out because Scorpion and Toad are playing new games.

But don’t worry! Scorpion talks to Mouse, and they all find a way to play together. They learn that it’s important to include everyone and try new things. In the end, they all have fun making sand art together.

Activities and Games

After the story, we played a game where we put pictures from the story in order. We also answered questions about why Mouse felt sad and how she felt better. It was a great way to understand the story better.

Then, Sophie and I played tic-tac-toe, which is also known as noughts and crosses. We had a fun game, and it ended in a tie, which we call a cat’s game. It’s always fun to play games with friends!

Let’s Play I Spy!

We also played “I Spy,” where we guessed things based on clues. Sophie gave clues about things with wings and lots of colors, and we guessed butterflies and rainbows. It was so much fun!

Guess What’s in My Mind

Finally, we played a game where Sophie had to guess what I was thinking about. I gave clues like “fun to play with,” “brown and white,” and “fluffy and warm.” Can you guess what it was? It was my dog!

Goodbye for Now!

It’s almost time to say goodbye, but I had so much fun with all of you today. Thank you for joining Circle Time with me, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids team. We can’t wait to see you again tomorrow. Bye-bye!

  • What is your favorite song to sing and dance to, and why does it make you feel happy?
  • Have you ever felt left out when your friends were playing? What did you do to feel better or join in the fun?
  • Can you think of a time when you made a new friend? How did you include them in your games or activities?
  1. Friendship Art Collage: Gather some old magazines, newspapers, or printed images. Cut out pictures of people, animals, or things that make you think of friendship and fun. Create a collage on a piece of paper that shows what friendship means to you. Think about how Scorpion, Mouse, and Toad found ways to play together. Share your collage with a friend or family member and explain why you chose each picture.

  2. Feelings Charades: With a friend or family member, take turns acting out different feelings without using words. You can use feelings like happy, sad, excited, or left out. The other person has to guess the feeling. After each turn, talk about a time you felt that way and what helped you feel better, just like Mouse did in the story.

  3. Nature’s I Spy: Go outside and play a game of “I Spy” using things you see in nature. Look for things that are colorful, have interesting shapes, or make you feel happy. For example, you might say, “I spy something green and tall,” and the answer could be a tree. This activity helps you notice the beauty around you and can make you feel as happy as singing and dancing!
