In this lesson, we learn about cheetahs, the fastest animals in the world, which inhabit Africa. Their unique physical adaptations, such as light bodies, strong muscles, and excellent eyesight, enable them to hunt swiftly and effectively, primarily targeting fast prey like impalas and gazelles. Despite their incredible speed, cheetahs can only maintain it for short bursts, making strategy and stealth crucial in their hunting process.
  1. What makes cheetahs the fastest animals in the world?
  2. Why do cheetahs need to run fast when they are hunting?
  3. How do cheetahs use their bodies to help them catch their food?

Meet the Cheetahs!

Hi there! We are cheetahs, and we live in Africa. We are the fastest animals in the whole world! We are built for speed with our light bodies, strong leg muscles, wide paws, and sharp claws that help us grip the ground. We also have big lungs to help us breathe lots of air when we run.

Why Do Cheetahs Run So Fast?

We run fast to catch our food! Our favorite meals are animals like impalas, wildebeests, and gazelles. These animals can run really fast too, so we have to be super quick to catch them.

How Do Cheetahs Hunt?

First, we use our excellent eyesight to spot our prey. Then, we stalk them. Stalking means we walk very quietly and stay low to the ground so they don’t see us. Our fur has spots that help us blend in with the grass and trees. Did you know the word “cheetah” means “spotted”? We also have special black markings on our faces that make us look different from other big cats.

Ready, Set, Go!

Once we are close enough, we run as fast as we can! We can only run super fast for about a minute. It’s like a race, and we have to hurry, or we might miss our dinner!

Fun Fact

Even though we are fast, we can’t run for long because it makes us very tired. So, we have to be smart and quick when we hunt.

Thanks for learning about us, the cheetahs! We hope you enjoyed our speedy adventure. Bye!

  • What do you think it would feel like to run as fast as a cheetah? Can you think of a time when you had to run really fast?
  • Why do you think cheetahs have spots on their fur? Can you think of other animals that have special patterns or colors to help them in the wild?
  • If you were a cheetah, what would be your favorite part of the day? Would you enjoy running fast, or would you like to rest after a big meal?
  1. Speedy Cheetah Race: Organize a fun race with your friends or family! Pretend to be cheetahs and see who can run the fastest. Use a stopwatch to time how long each person can run at their top speed. Remember, cheetahs can only run fast for a short time, so try running for just one minute. After the race, talk about how it felt to run fast and what you noticed about your breathing and energy.

  2. Spot the Cheetah: Create your own cheetah mask using paper plates, markers, and string. Draw spots on your mask to help you blend in, just like a cheetah. Once your mask is ready, play a game of hide and seek. Try to hide in places where your mask helps you blend in with your surroundings. After the game, discuss how the cheetah’s spots help it stay hidden in the wild.

  3. Animal Observation Journal: Start a journal where you can draw and write about animals you see in your neighborhood or at the zoo. Pay special attention to how they move and what features help them survive, just like the cheetah’s speed and spots. Share your observations with your class or family and talk about how different animals have special abilities that help them in their environment.

Hi there! We’re cheetahs, and we live in Africa. We’re the fastest animals in the world, built for speed. We have light bodies, strong leg muscles, wide paws, sharp claws for grip, and large lungs for air.

So, why do we run so fast? To catch our food! We like to eat impalas, wildebeests, and gazelles. All these animals can run very fast, so we have to chase them to catch them.

First, we spot them with our excellent eyesight. Then we stalk them, which means we walk quietly and stay low to the ground. Because our fur is spotted, we’re very hard to see. In fact, the name “cheetah” comes from a word meaning “spotted.” We also have special markings from our nose to our eyes and mouths. If you see these markings, you’ll never confuse us with any other cat.

Once we get close to our prey, we run! We can run very fast for about a minute. Ready, steady, go! Better hurry, or I’ll be left without dinner!
