In this lesson, a giraffe introduces itself and shares interesting facts about its height, habitat, and lifestyle. The giraffe explains how its long neck and tongue help it reach food, the unique way it drinks water, the importance of family groups for safety, and its surprising speed despite its tall stature. Overall, the lesson highlights the giraffe’s adaptations and social behaviors in the savanna.
  1. What helps the giraffe reach its favorite food?
  2. How does the giraffe drink water even though it is very tall?
  3. Why do giraffes look in different directions when they are with their family?

Hello, Friends!

Hi there! I’m a giraffe, and guess what? I’m super tall! In fact, I’m the tallest animal in the whole wide world. I’m even taller than a big double-decker bus! I live in a place called the savanna, where the sun shines bright and the grass is tall.

Why Am I So Tall?

Well, my long neck helps me reach my favorite food—yummy leaves at the top of tall trees. I have a special long tongue that helps me pick the leaves without getting poked by thorns. Isn’t that cool?

Drinking Water

After munching on leaves, I like to have a drink of water. But because I’m so tall, drinking can be a bit tricky. I have to spread my legs and bend down low to reach the water. It might look funny, but that’s okay! We all have our own ways of doing things.

Family Time

Giraffes like me live in family groups. When we eat or drink, each of us looks in a different direction. This way, we can watch out for any danger, like lions, and keep each other safe.

Fast Runners

Did you know that I can run faster than a horse? It’s true! Even though I’m tall, I can move really quickly when I need to.

Goodbye for Now!

Thanks for learning about giraffes with me. I hope you had fun! See you next time!

  1. Giraffes have long necks to help them reach leaves on tall trees. Can you think of something you do in a special way because of your size or abilities? How does it help you?
  2. Giraffes live in family groups and watch out for each other. Can you share a time when you helped someone in your family or a friend? How did it make you feel?
  3. Giraffes can run really fast even though they are so tall. What is something you are really good at, and how did you learn to do it so well?
  1. Neck Stretching Game: Let’s pretend to be giraffes! Find a safe space in your home or classroom and try to reach for the sky with your arms as if they were a giraffe’s neck. Can you stretch as high as you can? Now, imagine there are leaves at the top of a tree. How would you use your long neck and tongue to reach them? Try to pick imaginary leaves without using your hands!

  2. Water Drinking Challenge: Just like a giraffe, let’s see how you can drink water in a fun way. Fill a cup with water and place it on the floor. Now, try to drink from it without using your hands, just like a giraffe bending down. Remember to be careful and have fun!

  3. Family Watch Game: Gather with your friends or family and form a circle. Pretend you are a group of giraffes. Each person should look in a different direction, just like giraffes do to keep each other safe. Take turns pretending to be a lion sneaking up on the group. Can the giraffes spot the lion in time?

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

[Music]

Hello there! I’m a giraffe, and as you may have noticed, I’m tall—actually, the tallest animal in the world! We’re even taller than a double-decker bus. I live in the savanna. The reason we have such long necks is because our favorite food is the leaves at the very top of the trees. We pick off the leaves with our long tongue, which is helpful for avoiding thorns.

[Music]

We like to wash down the leaves with a drink of water, but drinking can be a challenge when you’re so tall. We may look a bit awkward when we spread our legs and lower our heads to drink, but no one’s perfect! We are animals that live in family groups, and when we’re feeding and drinking, each member of our group faces a different direction to keep an eye out for predators, especially lions.

You know, we giraffes can run faster than horses!
