In this lesson, we learned about the aardvark, a unique mammal native to Africa known for its long nose and big ears. Aardvarks primarily eat termites, using their sharp claws and long tongues to access these insects, and they dig deep burrows for shelter while employing clever strategies to stay safe from predators. Overall, aardvarks are fascinating creatures that showcase the diversity of the animal kingdom.
  1. What is an aardvark’s favorite food?
  2. How does an aardvark stay safe from other animals?
  3. What special features does an aardvark have that make it unique?

Meet the Aardvark!

Hello there! Let me introduce you to a special animal called the aardvark. The aardvark lives in Africa, and its name means “Earth Pig.” But guess what? It’s not a pig at all! It’s a unique mammal, which means it’s an animal that has fur and feeds its babies milk.

What Does an Aardvark Look Like?

An aardvark has a long nose that looks a bit like a pig’s snout, and it also has big ears like a donkey. Isn’t that interesting? Inside its nose, it has tiny hairs that help keep out dust and little bugs when it digs in the ground. And when it wants to keep insects out of its ears, it can fold them over like a magic trick!

Yummy Termites!

Do you know what aardvarks love to eat? Termites! Termites are tiny insects that live in big nests. Aardvarks use their sharp claws to open these nests and then use their long, sticky tongues to scoop up the tasty termites. Yum!

Staying Safe

Aardvarks have to be careful because animals like lions and leopards might want to catch them. But aardvarks are smart! They can dig really fast to hide underground, or they can use their claws to scare away any enemies.

Home Sweet Home

Aardvarks like to live alone in deep burrows, which are like tunnels they dig in the ground. They are very good at making their own cozy homes.

So, next time you think of aardvarks, remember how special they are with their long noses, big ears, and love for termites. They are truly one-of-a-kind animals!

Goodbye for now, and have a great day learning about amazing animals!

  1. What do you think it would be like to have a long nose like an aardvark? How might it help you, and what fun things could you do with it?
  2. Imagine you are an aardvark for a day. What would you do to find food, and how would you stay safe from other animals?
  3. Have you ever seen an animal that digs or burrows like an aardvark? What was it, and what do you think it was doing?
  1. Build Your Own Aardvark Burrow: Gather some materials like cardboard boxes, paper towel rolls, and blankets. Create a cozy burrow for a toy aardvark or any small stuffed animal. Think about how an aardvark would dig and make its home. Once your burrow is ready, share it with your family and explain how aardvarks use their burrows to stay safe.

  2. Termite Hunt Game: Pretend to be an aardvark on a termite hunt! Use a long piece of string or yarn as your “tongue” and try to pick up small objects like buttons or paper clips scattered around the room. Time yourself to see how many “termites” you can collect in one minute. Discuss how aardvarks use their long, sticky tongues to catch termites in real life.

  3. Animal Ears Exploration: Aardvarks have big ears like a donkey. Find pictures of different animals with unique ears, such as elephants, rabbits, and foxes. Discuss with a friend or family member how these animals might use their ears. Do they help them hear better, keep cool, or something else? Draw your favorite animal with special ears and share why you chose it.

Good afternoon! I’m the aardvark, and you’re in my way. I live in Africa. My name, “aardvark,” means “Earth Pig,” but I’m not a pig. Even though I might look like one, I’m a mammal, and I think it’s fair to say that I’m unlike any other mammal.

Not only do I have a long, pig-like snout, but I also have large, donkey-like ears. Check this out: I have hair on the inside of my nostrils that helps me filter out dust and small insects when I’m digging. I can fold my ears over to stop insects from getting in, which is especially useful when I’m feeding on termites.

Termites are like ants, only tastier! They live in nests, which I rip open with my sharp claws. I use my long, sticky tongue to lick them up.

Oh, excuse me! I use my claws for other things as well. When enemies like lions or leopards threaten me, I can dig very quickly and disappear below ground, or I can kick and slash at my attacker with my claws.

Aardvarks live on their own in deep burrows.

Do you mind? We live on our own. You’re in my way again!

Hello! Okay, take care for now. Bye!
