Hello everyone! Welcome back to Story Time Family! How are you today? Is it sunny where you are? It’s a beautiful sunny day here, and we’re enjoying the lovely spring weather. I hope you had a fun day at school! Are you ready to read a book with us?
Today, we’re going to read “Insects, Bugs, and Rock and Roll” by Alex Brooks. Let’s dive into the story!
Once upon a time, there was a spider who was always grumpy and didn’t have any friends. He had a huge web that was the best at catching flies. Catching bugs was his favorite game, but he only ate one and kept the rest for fun.
One morning, the spider woke up to a beautiful sound. It was music! For the first time in years, the spider smiled and felt happy. But then the music stopped, and he saw a fly wearing sunglasses and a cool red hairstyle.
The spider thought, “This fly is so bold! Maybe I’ll have him for breakfast.” But then he realized the fly was the one making the music! The fly was using the spider’s web to play tunes. The spider’s feet started tapping to the beat.
The fly asked the spider if he could sing. The spider was shy but decided to try. He sang beautifully! A crowd gathered, clapping and cheering. The spider loved being on stage and forgot all about being grumpy.
After the show, the spider felt sorry for being mean to other bugs. He told the fly, “I’ve been a bad guy. I’ve bullied bees and termites. I just want to sing and be good. Will you help me?”
The spider and the fly formed a band and traveled the world. They became famous and made lots of friends. They were the best band since the Beatles!
One day, the fly wanted to do more than just play music. He wanted to help other insects. So, he started making instruments for them to play, bridges for them to cross, and hammocks for them to rest.
The spider and the fly stayed best friends forever. They helped many bugs and made the world a better place. The queen bee even gave the spider a special award for his kindness!
Wasn’t that a fun story? If you liked it, give us a thumbs up and subscribe for more stories. Thanks for joining us today. See you next time! Bye-bye!
Spider Web Music: Just like the fly used the spider’s web to make music, you can create your own musical instrument! Find some rubber bands and stretch them over an empty box or a container. Pluck the rubber bands and listen to the different sounds they make. Can you create a tune? Try using different sizes of rubber bands to see how the sound changes.
Friendship Role Play: In the story, the spider and the fly became friends and formed a band. With a friend or family member, act out a scene where you meet someone new and become friends. What would you say to make them feel welcome? How can you work together to do something fun, like starting a band or playing a game?
Helping Hands: The fly helped other insects by making instruments and bridges. Think of a way you can help someone in your family or community. Maybe you can draw a picture for a friend, help a sibling with their homework, or clean up a park. Talk about how helping others makes you feel and why it’s important.

Thank you! Hi everyone, welcome back to the Story Time Family! How’s everyone doing today? Is it sunny where you are? It is absolutely beautiful here today; we are enjoying a sunny spring day at 23 degrees. I hope you had a fun day at school! Are you ready to sit down and read a book with us?
Today we have “Insects, Bugs, and Rock and Roll” by Alex Brooks. Let’s get started, shall we?
“Insects, Bugs, and Rock and Roll”
Once upon a time, there was a spider who was quite grumpy and had no friends at all. His gigantic web was the best, and avoiding his trap was the hardest test for the flies. As the web grew bigger, more flies were caught. Snaring bugs was his favorite sport, but he would only eat one; the rest were just for fun.
Then one morning, after dreaming of flies—the juiciest kind with googly eyes—spider was woken by a glorious sound. Beautiful music had him spellbound! For the first time in years, spider smiled. He felt so happy that his eyes filled with tears. But suddenly, the music ended, and his mood quickly changed. Right in front of him appeared the smuggest of flies, kicking back with hands behind his head, wearing sunglasses and a Mohican dyed red.
Spider thought, “The cheek of this guy! I guess for breakfast, I’m having poached fly.” But as spider moved into position to snatch him, he realized the fly was actually the musician! The fly strummed and slid around, using spider’s web to create the sound. Spider looked down and saw his jiggling feet moving to the fly’s funky beat.
Then the fly looked at spider, pointed his wing, and coolly said, “Don’t suppose you can sing?” Spider blushed shyly and replied, “Well, I don’t really know,” but he opened his mouth and gave it a go—perfectly in tune with harmonious tones! Spider had a talent he had never known.
A crowd slowly appeared, clapping, dancing, whooping, and cheering. Spider was clearly born for the stage and could barely remember his previous rage. They partied all night and into the day. Then spider said, “Fly, please step this way.” With his head hung low, he sighed, “My friend, I’ve been an awful guy. I’ve tormented termites, bullied bees, and I can’t even tell you what I’ve done to fleas. Cricket, athletics, basketball, bugbee lies, hockey—I’ve played them all. I feel so ashamed of all I’ve done because harming others should never be fun. I don’t want to be evil; I just want to sing. If you agree to take me under your wing…”
So they formed a band, traveled worldwide, hung out with the likes of Pink Floyd, made platinum records, reached the top of the charts, sold out arenas, and won countless hearts. Spider and fly became a duo with no equals—the greatest band since the world-renowned Beatles!
But then one evening, while on tour, the fly said, “I must do more. I need to try to right my wrongs more than just writing songs. I once built webs for reasons so cruel, but instead, they should be loved by all.”
The very next day, he started creating instruments for insects to play, made bridges for bugs to cross, hammocks for hornets to take a nap, curtains for cockroaches to keep out light, trampolines for grasshoppers to gain some flight, nets for gnats, and shade for slugs who lost their hats. Spider continued for many years until his spinnerets grew old and sore. For all his hard work and goodness, the queen bee awarded him a knighthood.
Spider and fly stayed glued together, two old buddies still rocking. Wherever fly went, spider went too, but he drew the line when it came to pooh!
And that was the end of “Insects, Bugs, and Rock and Roll.”
