Welcome to Circle Time!

Hello, friends! Welcome to Circle Time. I’m Caroline, and I’m here with my friend, Paul. We’re excited to have you join us today!

Story Time: “Into the Night”

Today, we’re going to read a book called “Into the Night” by Cynthia Platt. It’s about a bat who lives in a big cave with his dad and other bats. But this bat is a bit different. Every night, while other bats fly out to explore, he prefers to stay home.

Bat’s dad loves the night and tries to show Bat how beautiful it is. He talks about the starlight, the lovely sounds, and the interesting shadows. But Bat isn’t convinced. He finds the night boring and would rather stay in the cave.

One night, Bat’s dad suggests they fly together. Bat agrees, even though he’s not too excited. As they fly, Dad points out shadows that look like different shapes and the frogs singing. Bat starts to notice these things too, even though he doesn’t want to admit it.

By the end of the night, Bat realizes he might have been missing out. He smiles at his dad and decides that maybe the night isn’t so bad after all. He even thinks about flying with his dad again the next night!

What Did Bat Learn?

At the beginning of the story, Bat didn’t want to go out at night. He loved staying home. But after flying with his dad, he saw how amazing the night could be. He saw shadows, fireflies, and heard the sounds of the night. Bat learned that trying new things can be fun and exciting!

Moon and Space Projects

Speaking of the night, do you ever see the moon? Sometimes it’s a small crescent, and other times it’s a big, bright circle. It’s always changing and so beautiful!

Today, we have some special moon and space projects to show you. Our friends sent us their amazing work!

Aura’s Moon Project

Aura made a full moon with stars around it. It looks fantastic!

Gracie’s Moon Project

Gracie used black and white paint to create a gray moon. She even used foil and a pencil to add details. So creative!

Oliver’s Moon Project

Oliver’s moon has great textures that look like craters. Well done, Oliver!

Sebastian’s Moon Project

Sebastian wrote, “The moon is bright and it’s made from moon rocks.” His project has a beautiful background that makes the moon and stars stand out.

Space Projects

Gigi colored a space page during Camp Khan Kids. It’s so colorful!

Mira created a solar system with different colors for each planet. Her Earth is green and blue, just like the real one!

Olivia made a solar system in the Khan Kids app and even has a little rocket ship. How cool!

Goodbye for Now!

Thank you, friends, for sharing your wonderful projects with us. If you make more moon or space drawings, be sure to send them our way. It’s time for us to say goodbye for now. Goodbye from Caroline, Paul, and the Khan Academy Kids team. See you next time!

  • What do you think Bat felt when he first went out into the night with his dad? Have you ever tried something new that you were unsure about at first?
  • Can you think of a time when you noticed something beautiful or interesting outside, like Bat did with the night? What was it, and how did it make you feel?
  • If you could create your own moon or space project, what would it look like? What materials would you use, and why?
  1. Nighttime Adventure Walk: With a parent or guardian, go on a short walk outside at night. Look up at the sky and try to spot the moon and stars. Listen carefully to the sounds around you. Do you hear any animals or insects? Can you see any shadows? Talk about what you notice and how it makes you feel. Draw a picture of your nighttime adventure when you get home.

  2. Shadow Shapes Game: During the day, use a flashlight or a lamp to create shadows on a wall. Try making different shapes with your hands or using toys to create interesting shadow figures. Can you make a shadow that looks like a bat or another animal? Take turns with a friend or family member to guess what each shadow shape is.

  3. Moon Phase Diary: Start a moon diary to track the moon’s shape each night for a week. Draw what the moon looks like each night and write a sentence about it. Is it a crescent, half, or full moon? At the end of the week, look at your drawings and see how the moon changed. Discuss why you think the moon looks different each night.
