In today’s Circle Time, Caroline and Sophie from the Khan Academy Kids Team engage children in exploring their feelings and daily routines through the story “Seven Days a Week,” which highlights the activities they do every day versus those done weekly. The lesson emphasizes the importance of creating a personal workspace for learning, where children can organize their materials and focus on their studies. The session concludes with a fun counting activity and encourages children to share their creative workspaces, fostering a sense of community and creativity.
  1. What are some things you do every day?
  2. Can you tell me what you want in your special workspace?
  3. How do you feel when you count with Peck?

Welcome to Circle Time!

Hello, friends! Today, we’re joining Caroline and her friend Sophie from the Khan Academy Kids Team for a fun Circle Time. How are you feeling today? Some of us might be full of energy, while others might feel a bit sleepy or bored. But don’t worry, we’ve got something exciting planned for everyone!

Seven Days a Week

We’re starting with a special book called “Seven Days a Week” by Cynthia Platt. In the story, Kodi and Sandy talk about the days of the week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Kodi finds it funny that there are things he does only once a week and things he does every day. Sandy only sees her grandma once a week, and Kodi goes to soccer practice three times a week. But there are also things they do every day, like taking a bath and reading bedtime stories.

What Do You Do Every Day?

Think about what you do every day. Maybe you brush your teeth, have lunch, or say thank you. These daily habits are important! Sandy and Kodi love hanging out every day, too. Do you have a special place at home where you can read and count? Some people call it a workspace.

Creating Your Workspace

Our friend, teacher Aimee, is here to show us how to make a workspace. A workspace is a special place where you have everything you need to learn. It’s like your bed for sleeping or the playground for playing. In your workspace, you focus on learning!

Gathering Materials

First, gather materials with the help of an adult. You might need pencils, crayons, paper, a notebook, your favorite book, a tablet for learning apps, and maybe a whiteboard. You can also have a schedule to know what you’re doing each day.

Organizing Your Workspace

Once you have your materials, find a basket or box to keep them organized. This way, you can easily move your workspace to a table, desk, or even the floor. Now, you’re ready to learn!

Counting Fun with Peck

Let’s have some fun with counting! Peck loves to count, and today we’re counting balloons up to seven. Can you help Peck count? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven! Great job! You can also try tracing the number seven on paper or in the air.

Creative Creations

We’ve received amazing drawings from our friends! Elise, Vata, Jack, Emona, Parth, Petra, Chiori, and Vithy have shared their wonderful artwork of our favorite characters like Kodi, Sandy, Reya, Peck, and Ollo. We love seeing your creativity!

Share Your Workspace

We’d love to see your workspace creations too! You can draw it, build it with boxes, or use things you find around the house. Show us how you made your special place for counting and reading.

Goodbye for Now!

It’s time to say goodbye, but we had so much fun reading, playing, and chatting with you today. We’ll see you next time. Goodbye from Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids Team!

  • What is something you do every day that makes you happy, and why do you think it’s important to do it every day?
  • If you could create your own special workspace, what would you include in it and why? How would it help you with your learning or playing?
  • Think about the days of the week. Do you have a favorite day, and what makes it special for you? Is there something you do only on that day?
  1. Create a Weekly Schedule: With the help of an adult, make a colorful weekly schedule using paper and crayons. Write down or draw pictures of activities you do each day, like going to school, playing, or visiting family. Hang it in your workspace and check it each day to see what’s planned. This will help you understand the concept of weekly routines and how they fit into your daily life.

  2. Daily Routine Detective: Become a detective and observe your daily habits. Each day, write down or draw one thing you do every day, like brushing your teeth or reading a bedtime story. At the end of the week, share your findings with a family member or friend and discuss why these daily activities are important.

  3. Workspace Design Challenge: Use building blocks, boxes, or any materials you have at home to create a mini model of your ideal workspace. Think about what items you need for learning and where they should go. Once you’ve built your model, explain to someone why you chose each item and how it helps you learn better.
