Hello, and welcome to the Kids Academy chess course! My name is Coach Rob, and I’m here to help you learn all about the exciting game of chess. Today, we’re going to meet two special chess pieces: the knight and the pawn. Let’s dive in!
The knight is a very cool piece in chess. It looks like a horse’s head because, in the past, knights rode horses into battle. Some people even call it a horse, but in chess, we call it the knight. What’s super special about the knight is that it can jump over other pieces on the board. No other piece, not even the king or queen, can do that!
When you look at a chessboard, the knight is easy to spot because of its horse head shape. When we write down the moves of the knight, we use the letter “N.” You might think we would use “K” because “knight” starts with a “K,” but we use “K” for the king. So, remember, “N” is for knight!
Now, let’s talk about the pawn. The pawn is the smallest and weakest piece on the chessboard. You can think of it as a little foot soldier. In some languages, people call it a farmer because it works hard on the board. Pawns are short and easy to spot among the other pieces.
When we write down the moves of a pawn, we can use the letter “P” or just write the square it’s on. Here’s a fun fact: a long time ago, pawns could only move one square at a time. But because games took too long, the rules changed. Now, when a pawn is on its starting square, it can move one or two squares forward. After that, it moves one square at a time.
Today, we learned about the knight and the pawn. We discovered what they look like, the special letters we use for their moves, and some interesting facts about them. Remember, the knight can jump over other pieces, and the pawn can move two squares on its first move!
Thanks for joining me today! Keep practicing and have fun with chess. See you next time!

Knight’s Jump Adventure: Create a mini chessboard on a piece of paper or use a real chessboard if you have one. Place a knight on the board. Your task is to move the knight to visit as many squares as possible without landing on the same square twice. Can you find a path that covers the entire board? Try this with a friend and see who can cover more squares!
Pawn’s Journey: Use small objects like coins or buttons to represent pawns. Set up a row of pawns on a table or floor. Practice moving them forward one or two squares, just like in a real game. Imagine they are little soldiers marching forward. Can you create a story about where they are going and what they might encounter on their journey?
Chess Piece Hunt: Go on a chess piece hunt around your home or classroom. Look for objects that remind you of the knight or pawn. For example, a toy horse could represent a knight, and a small figurine could be a pawn. Take pictures or draw what you find and share with your classmates. How many different “knights” and “pawns” can you discover?

Welcome to Kids Academy! Hi, and welcome to the Kids Academy chess course. My name is Robert Lazorczyk, and I’m a certified teacher with international and national chess teaching certifications. I will be your guide as we begin to master this great game. Now, let’s get to chess!
Hello from Kids Academy! I am Coach Rob, and today we will introduce the knight and the pawn.
The knight looks like a horse’s head because knights used to ride horses in battle; they made up what’s called the cavalry. Some people still refer to the piece as a horse, or in other languages, they call it a jumper, a donkey, or a springer. However, every chess player can agree that the proper term is the knight.
Knights have a special ability that no one else can do, not even the king or the queen. Knights can jump over other pieces, including their own color pieces as well as opposing pieces. We will learn more about the knight and how it moves later on, but for now, I want you to familiarize yourself with what the knight looks like as a chess piece.
The symbol of the knight, which is a horse’s head, looks very similar to the actual chess piece. Also, for the letter we use when recording knight moves: for our spelling bee winners out there, you already know that the word “knight” begins with the letter K, but we can’t use the letter K for recording knight moves. Any idea why? It’s because K is already used for king, and we can’t use K for two pieces, as that would be confusing when recording our moves. So, we use the letter N for knight.
Now, on to the pawn. The pawn is the weakest unit on the board, and you can think of it as the foot soldier. In some languages, like German, they refer to it as the farmer, likely because they do a lot of the hard work. Pawns are much shorter than the other pieces, making them easy to spot. The pawn symbol looks very similar to the actual piece.
We can use the letter P when recording pawn moves, or we can just refer to the square that the pawn is on when we write the moves down. We will learn more about that in another video.
A neat fact about pawns is that they used to only move one square per turn, but chess players began to complain that the game was taking too long. So, the rules were eventually changed. Now, when a pawn is on its starting square, it may move one step or two in a single turn. However, once the pawn has left the starting square, it must move one square at a time, just like it always has.
So today, we learned about the knight and the pawn. We will learn more about their movements later on in the videos, but it’s very important that you know what they look like, the letters we use for recording those moves, and also the knight and pawn symbols.
Take care, and I’ll see you soon! Bye-bye!
