Learning About the Letter L

Let’s have fun learning about the letter L! We have two kinds of Ls: a big L and a small L. They are both lovely letters!

Meet the Ladybug

Look, there’s a ladybug! The ladybug is sitting on a green leaf. Both “ladybug” and “leaf” start with the letter L. Can you say L, L?

Big L and Small L

We can write the letter L in two ways. The big L looks like this: L. The small L looks like this: l. They are both important and fun to write!

Let’s Practice

Can you find things around you that start with the letter L? Maybe a lamp, a lion, or even a lemon! Try saying L, L as you find them.

Sing Along

Let’s sing a little song: “Big L, small L, lovely letter L. The ladybug is on a leaf. L, L.” Singing helps us remember!

Keep practicing the letter L, and soon you’ll know it very well. Learning letters is fun!

  • Can you think of other words that start with the letter L? What are some of your favorite things that begin with L?
  • Have you ever seen a ladybug or a leaf outside? Where did you see them, and what did they look like?
  • Why do you think it’s important to learn about letters like L? How do they help us in reading and writing?
  1. Letter L Hunt: Go on a scavenger hunt around your home or classroom to find objects that start with the letter L. You might find a lamp, a lemon, or even a little toy lion. Once you find them, try to draw a picture of each item and practice writing the word next to it. Can you think of more L words?

  2. Leaf Art: Collect some leaves from outside and create a leaf collage. Arrange the leaves to form the shape of a big L or a small l. You can glue them onto a piece of paper and decorate your artwork with crayons or stickers. As you work, say the words “leaf” and “ladybug” out loud to practice the L sound.

  3. Letter L Storytime: With a grown-up’s help, make up a short story using as many L words as you can. For example, “Once upon a time, a little lion found a lovely leaf.” Draw pictures to go along with your story and share it with your friends or family. How many L words can you include?
