In this lesson on Number Sense Island, students learn about the concepts of greater than, less than, and equal to through the adventures of the Lesser Yeti, who compares its size to various objects and other Yetis. The lesson emphasizes understanding numerical relationships, illustrating that three is greater than one, and five is less than nine, while encouraging students to engage with fun activities to reinforce these concepts.
  1. What does the Lesser Yeti say about things that are greater than it?
  2. Can you tell me which number is greater: three or one?
  3. What does it mean when two Yetis say they are equal in size?

Learn Greater Than, Less Than, and Equal To

Welcome to Number Sense Island!

On Number Sense Island, there are some amazing creatures. Let’s meet the Lesser Yeti! The Lesser Yeti loves to point out things that are bigger, taller, or greater than itself.

The Lesser Yeti’s Adventures

The Lesser Yeti says, “This rock is greater than me.” Then it points to a tree and says, “This tree is greater than me.” Finally, it looks at a mountain and says, “This mountain is greater than me.”

Meeting of the Yetis

What’s happening now? A meeting of Yetis! One Yeti says, “This Yeti is equal to me in size; it is the same.” That means they are the same size!

Understanding Greater Than and Less Than

Let’s learn about numbers! Three is greater than one. This means three is bigger than one. Seven is greater than one too. Can you tell which number is greater?

Nine is greater than five. That means nine is bigger than five. Now, can you tell which number is less?

Five is less than nine. This means five is smaller than nine.

Goodbye to Number Sense Island

And so, we say goodbye to the extraordinary creatures of Number Sense Island. Remember, you can learn more by doing fun activities!

  • Can you think of something in your home or school that is greater than you in size? What about something that is less than you in size?
  • Imagine you are a Yeti on Number Sense Island. What would you say is equal to you in size? Can you find something that is the same size as you?
  • When you look around outside, what are some things that are greater than a tree? Can you find something that is less than a tree?
  1. Yeti Size Hunt: Go on a Yeti Size Hunt around your home or classroom! Find objects that are greater than, less than, or equal to the size of your hand. For each object, say, “This [object] is greater than my hand,” “This [object] is less than my hand,” or “This [object] is equal to my hand.” Share your findings with a friend or family member!

  2. Number Line Adventure: Create a simple number line from 1 to 10 using paper or chalk. Place small toys or objects on different numbers. Ask questions like, “Is the toy on number 7 greater than or less than the toy on number 3?” Move the toys around and explore different comparisons. Can you find two numbers that are equal?

  3. Story Time with Numbers: Draw a picture story of the Lesser Yeti meeting different objects. For each object, write a sentence using “greater than,” “less than,” or “equal to.” For example, “The Lesser Yeti meets a flower. The flower is less than the Yeti.” Share your story with your class or family!
