share us on:

In today’s Circle Time with Caroline and Sophie, we explored the imaginative story “Sidewalk Chalk,” where Peck transforms his boredom into an exciting adventure by using chalk to create a camping scene and a swimming lake. We also learned about the “ch” sound, practicing words that begin with “ch” and engaging in fun activities to reinforce our understanding. The lesson emphasized the power of creativity and imagination, encouraging everyone to think about what they would create with chalk.
  1. What did Peck use to create his adventure?
  2. Can you think of something fun you would draw with chalk?
  3. What sound do the letters C and H make together?

Welcome to Circle Time with Caroline and Sophie!

Hey there! Today, we’re diving into a fun story from Khan Academy Kids called “Sidewalk Chalk.” Our friends Caroline and Sophie are here to guide us through this exciting adventure. Let’s see what Peck, the main character, is up to!

Peck’s Imaginative Adventure

Peck was feeling a bit bored because his friends were busy and couldn’t play with him. He wished he could go camping or swimming. Then, he had a brilliant idea! Peck decided to use his imagination and some chalk to create his own adventure right at home.

First, Peck drew a huge mountain with his chalk, imagining it as a perfect camping spot. He set up a pretend tent and then thought about cooling off. So, he drew a blue lake and pretended to swim in it with goggles and flippers. Isn’t that creative?

Using Imagination to Have Fun

Peck’s adventure didn’t stop there. As it got dark, he wanted to look at the stars. So, he decided to make a telescope. Sophie showed us how we can use simple things like wrapping paper or even our hands to pretend we’re looking through a telescope. What do you see through your telescope?

Later, Peck’s friends Kodi and Ollo joined him. They drew a campfire and toasted marshmallows together. What a cozy camp they created with just chalk and imagination!

Learning the “Ch” Sound

After the story, we learned about the “ch” sound. When the letter C and H come together, they make the “ch” sound, like in “cheese” or “chick.” We practiced finding words that start with this sound and even did a fun matching activity.

Words and Sounds

We discovered words like “camp” that start with the “c” sound and “chalk” that start with the “ch” sound. Peck used chalk to draw his adventure, and it was chilly at his camp, which also starts with “ch.” Isn’t it fun to learn new sounds?

What Would You Create?

Before we wrapped up, Caroline and Sophie asked us what we would create with a piece of chalk. Some friends imagined drawing a school or a zoo. With chalk and imagination, the possibilities are endless!

Thanks for joining us today. Remember, with a little creativity, you can turn any day into an adventure. We can’t wait to see you again tomorrow for more fun and learning. Bye for now!

  • What kinds of adventures would you create if you had a piece of chalk and a big sidewalk to draw on? Can you think of something fun or exciting you would like to imagine?
  • Peck used his imagination to have fun even when his friends were busy. Can you think of a time when you used your imagination to play or create something special? What did you do?
  • Peck’s friends joined him later to draw a campfire and toast marshmallows. How do you feel when you play or create with friends? What are some things you like to do together?
  1. Chalk Adventure Map: Grab some sidewalk chalk and head outside with a grown-up. Draw a big map on the ground, just like Peck did. Think about what you want to include in your adventure. Maybe a mountain, a river, or even a treasure island! Use your imagination to create a story around your map. What happens at each place you drew? Share your story with a friend or family member.

  2. Sound Hunt: Go on a “ch” sound hunt around your house or classroom. Look for objects that start with the “ch” sound, like “chair” or “chocolate.” Make a list of all the “ch” words you find. Can you think of more words that start with the “ch” sound? Try to use them in a sentence or draw a picture of them with your chalk.

  3. Imagination Telescope: Make your own pretend telescope using a cardboard tube or by rolling up a piece of paper. Go outside or look out a window and pretend to see different things through your telescope. What do you imagine is out there? Maybe a spaceship or a magical forest? Draw what you see with your chalk or tell someone about your imaginative discoveries.
