Ocean Adventure: Exploring the Rocky Shore

Welcome, little ocean explorers! Are you ready to dive into a fun adventure under the waves? Let’s go explore and learn together!

Discovering the Rocky Shore

Today, we’re heading to a special place called a rocky shoreline. Do you know what that is? It’s a beach covered with lots of rocks! Let’s get ready to explore and see what we can find.

Meeting the Fur Seals

Look over there! Those animals are called fur seals. Want to know more about them? Fur seals have soft fur that keeps them warm in the water. They love to rest on the rocks and take care of their babies, called pups. Isn’t that cute? Baby dogs are called pups too!

Swimming and Playing

Fur seal pups learn to swim in little pools of water surrounded by rocks. These are called rock pools. The fur seals use their flippers to swim fast and glide through the water. They love to play just like you do!

Learning About Textures

Let’s talk about how things feel. Fur seals have soft fur. Soft is a texture, which means how something feels when you touch it. Can you find something soft around you? Maybe a feather or a blanket? Rocks are hard, but feathers are soft!

Fun and Games

Fur seals love to play with their friends all day long. Let’s play a game too! Up, down, turn around! Let’s play up and down all day!

Time to Rest

Wow, what an amazing day we’ve had! We’ve learned so much about fur seals and textures. Now, it’s time to rest, just like the fur seals do. Maybe even have a little dance party before we say goodbye!

Keep Exploring!

Thanks for joining us on this ocean adventure! We had so much fun playing and learning by the shore. Remember to keep exploring and discovering new things. See you next time, little explorers!

  • What do you think it would be like to visit a rocky shore? Have you ever been to a beach with lots of rocks? What did you see or find there?
  • If you were a fur seal, what games would you like to play with your friends in the rock pools? Can you think of any games you play with your friends that are similar?
  • We learned that fur seals have soft fur. Can you find something soft around you right now? What other textures can you find, like something hard or rough?
  1. Texture Hunt: Go on a texture hunt around your home or classroom! Find different objects and feel them with your hands. Can you find something soft like the fur of a seal? How about something hard like a rock? Share what you find with your friends and describe how each item feels.

  2. Rock Pool Creation: Create your own mini rock pool using a shallow container, some water, and small rocks. Add toy animals or figures to represent fur seals and other sea creatures. Watch how they “swim” and “play” in your rock pool. Imagine what it would be like to be a fur seal pup learning to swim!

  3. Fur Seal Movement Game: Pretend to be a fur seal! Use your arms as flippers and practice swimming around the room. Can you glide smoothly like a seal? Try moving fast and then slow. Invite your friends to join and have a seal race! How does it feel to move like a seal?

Ocean explorers, here we go! Under the waves, adventure awaits!

In the water, under the sun, down in the reefs, we’re playing and learning with friends together—the fun never ends!

Ocean explorers, let’s go!

Hi everyone! We’re on our way to explore a rocky shoreline. I see it up ahead—prepare for land! Want to join us? Alright, let’s go, explorer friends! How are you? Come along with us, and we’ll learn something new!

What’s a rocky shoreline? Good question! A rocky shore is another word for a beach, and this shore is covered in rocks.

Wow, there sure are a lot of rocks on this rocky shore! What’s over there?

Those animals are called fur seals. Want to take a closer look? When you’re feeling curious and want to know, take a closer look, and your mind will grow!

What’s a fur seal? Let me guess—it’s a seal with fur!

You’re right! Their fur keeps them warm when they are in the water.

Why are they laying on the rocks?

They’re resting. Fur seals spend most of their time in the water; they only come back to shore to rest and look after their pups.

There are pups here too!

Not those kinds of pups! Baby seals are called pups.

Hey, baby dogs are called pups too! Maybe I should take a rest with the other pups.

[Laughter]

Look, there are some more over there! They’re swimming!

They sure are! Fur seal pups learn to swim in rock pools. Rock pools are small pools of water surrounded by rocks.

You have such soft fur!

That’s right! Fur seals do have soft fur. Soft is a texture; a texture is how something feels to your touch.

What else can you find on the beach that is soft?

This rock isn’t soft.

No, that rock is hard.

This feather is soft!

That’s right! Well done! The rock is hard, and the feather is soft.

This blanket is soft too!

Time for another rest!

Hey, look at those fur seals waddling across the rocks!

Wow, look at them go! Fur seals use their flippers to help them swim fast.

Want to swim with the fur seals? Let’s go!

They just glide through the water!

You’re right! Fur seals can dive deep and stay underwater for a long time.

It looks like they’re playing!

They are! Fur seals are very playful; they like to play as much as you do!

I don’t think anyone likes to play as much as Dean!

Fur seals like to play with their friends all day!

Let’s play with our friends and hope the day won’t end!

Up, down, turn around! I go up, you go down! Up, down, let’s play up and down all day!

Fur seals like to play with their friends all day!

Let’s play with our friends and hope the day won’t end!

[Music]

Wow, what an amazing day! But now I’m tired.

Me too! Maybe we should take a rest like the fur seals. What do you think, Dean?

Today we learned that fur seals have fur to keep them warm, and their babies are called pups. We also found things that were soft and hard.

There’s only one more thing to do—dance party!

[Music]

What a day! It’s so much fun playing with friends by the shore, down below the water, up on the shore—so much to learn, so much to explore!

We’re so glad you could play with us—Tinker, Cow, Dean, Neptune, and Opus!

What a day! It’s so much fun playing with friends by the shore.

Thanks for joining us! See you next time! Until then, keep exploring!
