What You Will Learn

Today, you will learn about three amazing flying things: helicopters, hang gliders, and hot air balloons! By the end of this lesson, you will be able to describe how each of these flying machines works, understand how they move in the sky, and share fun facts about them. Get ready to explore the exciting world of flight and impress your friends with what you discover!

Let's Think

  1. What do you think makes a helicopter fly up in the sky?
  2. How do hang gliders stay in the air without an engine?
  3. Why do hot air balloons go up when the air inside them gets hot?

Let’s Learn About Flying Things!

Hi there! Today, we’re going to talk about some super cool things that can fly up in the sky. Are you ready? Let’s go!

Helicopter

Have you ever seen a helicopter? It’s a flying machine that has big spinning blades on top. These blades help it lift off the ground and fly high in the sky. Helicopters can go up, down, and even hover in one place like a hummingbird. Isn’t that amazing?

Hang Glider

Next, we have a hang glider. A hang glider is a special kind of flying machine that looks like a big kite. People can hang underneath it and glide through the air. Hang gliders don’t have engines; they use the wind to soar and glide. Imagine flying like a bird!

Hot Air Balloon

Finally, let’s talk about hot air balloons. These are big, colorful balloons that float in the sky. They have a basket underneath where people can stand. Hot air balloons rise up because hot air is lighter than cold air. When the air inside the balloon gets hot, the balloon goes up, up, and away!

Fun Fact

Did you know that the first hot air balloon flight happened over 200 years ago? People were so excited to see something flying in the sky for the first time!

Now you know about helicopters, hang gliders, and hot air balloons. Next time you see something flying, you can guess what it might be. Keep looking up and enjoy the wonders of the sky!

Discussion Questions

  • Have you ever seen a helicopter, hang glider, or hot air balloon in real life? What did it look like, and how did it make you feel?
  • If you could fly in one of these flying machines, which one would you choose and why? What do you think you would see from up in the sky?
  • Imagine you could invent your own flying machine. What would it look like, and how would it work? What special features would it have?

Lesson Activities

  1. Helicopter Craft: Let’s make our own helicopter! Use a paper template to create a simple helicopter with spinning blades. Once you’ve made your helicopter, try spinning the blades and see how it moves through the air. Can you make it hover like a real helicopter?

  2. Windy Day Hang Glider: On a windy day, take a small piece of paper and fold it into a simple glider shape. Go outside and see how the wind helps your paper glider fly. Can you make it glide further by changing its shape or throwing it differently?

  3. Hot Air Balloon Experiment: With the help of an adult, fill a small plastic bag with warm air from a hairdryer. Watch how the warm air makes the bag rise. Can you feel the difference between the warm air inside the bag and the cooler air outside?
