In today’s Circle Time with Khan Academy Kids, Caroline and Sophie led a fun musical adventure to the zoo, encouraging children to imitate various animals through movement and song. They also learned about red pandas, their habitat, and behaviors, and enjoyed a show and tell featuring beautiful drawings from a friend in Nepal. The session concluded with a warm goodbye, inviting children to share their own creations in future lessons.
  1. What animals did we pretend to be during our musical adventure?
  2. What do red pandas like to eat?
  3. Can you tell me something special about how red pandas take care of their babies?

Welcome to Circle Time with Khan Academy Kids!

Hello, friends! I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids team, and I’m so happy to see you all here today. I’m joined by my friend, Sophie. Hi, Sophie!

A Musical Adventure to the Zoo

Today, we’re going on a special musical field trip to the zoo with Caitie from Super Simple Songs. Let’s say hi to Caitie!

Hi, everyone! It’s great to see you. Let’s move like different animals before we start our song. Get up on your feet and let’s try it!

  • Elephants: Stomp your feet like big elephants and make a trunk with your arm. Try making an elephant sound! (imitating elephant trumpeting)
  • Kangaroos: Jump, jump, jump like a kangaroo!
  • Monkeys: Swing your arms like monkeys swinging from trees. (imitating monkey chattering)
  • Penguins: Waddle like penguins with your flippers out. Waddle, waddle!
  • Snakes: Slither like a snake and make a hissing sound. (hisses)
  • Polar Bears: Swim like polar bears, moving your arms through the water.

Great job, everyone! Now, let’s sing our song and move like the animals at the zoo!

Learning About Red Pandas

Now, let’s read a book about red pandas. Red pandas are mammals that live in bamboo forests. They have thick reddish fur and long, ringed tails to help them balance on branches.

Red pandas are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day and look for food at night. They love eating bamboo, fruits, flowers, and sometimes bird eggs.

Female red pandas build dens with plants and twigs for their cubs. They carry their cubs with their mouths. Isn’t that interesting?

Show and Tell

Today, we have a show and tell from our friend Arathnia from Nepal. She sent us three beautiful drawings of outdoor scenes. We see lots of green, rain, flowers, and even a sunny day with birds and butterflies. Thank you, Arathnia!

We’d love to see your show and tells, too. Ask your parents to help you send them to us.

Goodbye for Now!

It’s time to say goodbye. Thank you for joining us today. Goodbye from Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids team! See you next time!

  1. What is your favorite animal from the zoo, and can you show us how it moves? Why do you like that animal the most?
  2. Have you ever seen a red panda or any other animal in real life? What did it look like, and what was it doing?
  3. If you could go on a musical adventure anywhere, where would you go and what animals would you like to see and hear?
  1. Animal Movement Exploration: Choose one animal from the zoo adventure and think about how it moves. Try to move like that animal in different places around your home or outside. For example, can you stomp like an elephant in the living room or waddle like a penguin in the garden? Ask a family member to join you and see if they can guess which animal you are pretending to be!

  2. Red Panda Habitat Creation: Use materials like paper, crayons, and small sticks to create a model of a red panda’s habitat. Think about what a bamboo forest looks like and include elements like trees, bamboo, and a small den for the red panda. Discuss with a friend or family member why these elements are important for the red panda’s survival.

  3. Nighttime Adventure Story: Imagine you are a red panda exploring the forest at night. Write or draw a short story about your adventure. What do you see? What do you eat? Do you meet any other animals? Share your story with someone and ask them what they would do if they were a red panda at night.
