In today’s Circle Time with Caroline and Sophie, the duo engages children with a playful theme centered around lemons, starting with a fun game and a story about making lemonade. They read “Lemonade Stand” by Cynthia Platt, which teaches valuable lessons about friendship and perseverance, while also introducing new vocabulary words that start with the “st” sound. The lesson culminates in a hands-on activity where children are encouraged to make their own lemonade at home and even set up a pretend lemonade stand, reinforcing the concepts learned in a fun and interactive way.
  1. What did Caroline and Sophie use to make lemonade?
  2. Can you name some words that start with the “st” sound?
  3. What would you do if you had a lemonade stand like Sandy and Ollo?

Welcome to Circle Time with Caroline and Sophie!

Hey there! Today, we’re going to have some fun with lemons. Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids Team is here with her friend Sophie, and they’re excited to share a story and some activities with you. Let’s dive in!

Playing with Lemons

Caroline and Sophie start by playing a fun game with lemons. Caroline has a bowl of lemons and pretends to pass them to Sophie, even though they’re in different houses. They have a good laugh when one of the lemons turns into a lime! Together, they count their lemons and realize they have five in total. What can they do with all these lemons? Let’s find out!

Reading “Lemonade Stand” by Cynthia Platt

Caroline and Sophie read a delightful story about two friends, Sandy and Ollo, who decide to make lemonade on a hot summer day. They gather lemons, water, and sugar, but accidentally use salt instead of sugar, making their lemonade super sour! After a few tries, they finally get it right and set up a lemonade stand. At first, no one stops by, but soon their friends Reya, Peck, and Kodi come to enjoy the tasty lemonade. Sandy and Ollo’s lemonade stand is a success!

Learning New Words

Caroline and Sophie teach us about words that start with the “st” sound, like “stand,” “star,” “stop,” and “start.” They play a fun game where they spell out these words using sounds. It’s a great way to learn how to blend letters together!

Making Lemonade

Now it’s time to make some lemonade! Caroline shows us how to make lemonade using lemons, water, sugar, and ice. She squeezes the lemon juice, adds water, and stirs in sugar to make it sweet. Finally, she adds ice to keep it cool. Yum! It’s a refreshing drink that’s perfect for a hot day.

Try It Yourself!

Caroline and Sophie encourage you to try making lemonade at home. You can even set up a pretend lemonade stand and serve your family. It’s a fun way to practice what you’ve learned and enjoy a tasty treat!

Thanks for joining Caroline and Sophie for circle time. They hope you had fun and learned something new. See you next time!

  1. Have you ever tried making lemonade or any other drink at home? What ingredients did you use, and how did it taste?
  2. Imagine you have a lemonade stand like Sandy and Ollo. Who would you invite to try your lemonade, and what would you do to make your stand special?
  3. Can you think of other words that start with the “st” sound? Try to come up with a list and share it with your friends or family!
  1. Lemon Counting Adventure: Gather a few lemons or any round objects you have at home. Pretend you are setting up your own lemonade stand. Count how many lemons you have, just like Caroline and Sophie did. Try arranging them in different ways, like in a line or a circle. How does the number of lemons change when you add or take away one? This will help you practice counting and simple addition or subtraction.

  2. Sound Detective: Become a sound detective and find words around your home that start with the “st” sound. Look for things like “stove,” “stairs,” or “stickers.” Write down the words you find and try to spell them out loud. You can even draw pictures of these items and create your own “st” sound book!

  3. Lemonade Taste Test: With the help of an adult, make a small batch of lemonade using different amounts of sugar and salt. Try a sip of each version and describe how they taste. Which one is your favorite? This activity will help you understand how different ingredients can change the taste of what you make.
