In this lesson, students are introduced to the joys of spring gardening as they prepare to start a vegetable garden at the Fort. With the help of Juniper the Earthworm, they learn about the essential needs of plants, such as sunlight and water, and how to choose the right plants for their garden’s conditions. The lesson emphasizes planning and teamwork as they create a planting calendar to guide their gardening adventure.
  1. What are two things that plants need to grow well?
  2. Why is it important to choose the right plants for our garden?
  3. How can Juniper the Earthworm help us with our vegetable garden?

Welcome to Spring Gardening Fun!

Hey there! It’s a bright and sunny morning, and that means spring is almost here. With spring comes more sunlight, warmer weather, and my favorite part: plants starting to grow again!

Let’s Start a Vegetable Garden

To see how plants grow, we’re going to start a vegetable garden at the Fort. This way, we can watch the plants grow and change throughout spring, summer, and even fall. We have an old planter box in the backyard that’s perfect for our garden, but it needs a little work before we can start planting.

Getting Ready for Planting

Before we plant anything, there are a few things we need to do to get ready. Our friend Juniper the Earthworm, who loves soil and gardening, is here to help us. She knows a lot about what plants need to grow.

What Do Plants Need?

Plants need water and sunlight to grow. Since they can’t move around to find these things, we need to make sure our garden is in a spot that gets enough sunlight and has good soil. We checked our garden bed and found that the soil is nice and dark, full of nutrients, but we might need to water it more once the plants start growing.

Choosing the Right Plants

Different plants have different needs. Some need more water, while others need more sunlight. Our garden spot doesn’t have much shade, so we’ll choose plants that do well in direct sunlight. We’ll also need to water the garden on dry days and pick plants that can handle a bit of rain.

Planning Our Garden

Juniper is going to help us create a planting calendar. This tool will help us decide when and what to plant. We’re excited to learn more about gardening from Juniper and have a fun project together!

  • What do you think is the most exciting part about starting a garden, and why?
  • Have you ever helped plant something before? What did you plant, and what was your favorite part of the experience?
  • Why do you think it’s important for plants to have the right amount of sunlight and water? Can you think of a place near your home where plants might grow well?
  1. Plant Observation Journal: Start your own plant observation journal! Choose a small plant or seed to grow at home. Each day, draw a picture of your plant and write down any changes you notice. Does it look taller? Are there new leaves? This will help you see how plants grow over time, just like in the vegetable garden at the Fort.

  2. Sunlight and Water Experiment: Try an experiment to see how sunlight and water affect plant growth. Take two small plants and place one in a sunny spot and the other in a shady area. Water them the same amount each day. After a week, compare how they look. Which one grew more? This will help you understand why it’s important to choose the right spot for your garden.

  3. Design Your Dream Garden: Use paper and crayons to draw your dream garden. Think about what plants you would like to grow and where they should go. Remember to consider how much sunlight each plant needs. Share your garden design with a friend or family member and explain why you chose those plants and their locations.
