In this Circle Time lesson, Caroline and her friend Sophie introduce children to Sandy, a character who shares her experiences of growing up in Australia and her special room filled with unique items from her homeland. The lesson encourages children to explore their own special places and learn about words that start with “sp,” while fostering an appreciation for different cultures and personal connections. Participants are invited to reflect on their own unique spaces and share them with others.
  1. What special things did Sandy have in her room?
  2. How did Sandy feel about missing Australia?
  3. Can you think of a special place that you like? What makes it special?

Welcome to Circle Time!

Hi there! Welcome to Circle Time with Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids Team and her friend Sophie. Today, we’re going to have some fun learning activities and read a special book. Are you ready?

Meet Sandy and Her Special Place

Today, we’re reading a book about Sandy, one of our favorite characters. Sandy’s room is a special place filled with toys, musical instruments, and souvenirs from Australia. Let’s explore what’s in Sandy’s room!

In Sandy’s room, you’ll find a kangaroo toy, posters of kangaroos and koalas, and a didgeridoo, which is a musical instrument from Australia. It’s a long tube with beautiful patterns, and you play it by blowing into it.

Sandy’s Journey from Australia

One day, Peck visited Sandy and asked if she had ever been to Australia. Sandy was born there! She shared how she moved to the United States with her parents. Sophie, who also moved from Australia, explained that it takes a long 14-hour flight to travel from Australia to America.

Sandy showed Peck some souvenirs, like a picture of a beach and her friend Pat the platypus. Sophie also shared a picture of her family in Australia and talked about living on a sunny farm with lots of animals.

Missing Home and New Adventures

Peck asked Sandy if she missed Australia. Sandy said she misses her friends and playing rugby, a sport similar to football. Sophie shared that she misses her family, the farm, and even the unique animals like kangaroos and koalas.

Australia is a special place, and Sandy loves talking about it. Peck was excited to learn more and hoped to visit Australia someday with Sandy.

Learning About Special Things

Sophie showed us some special things from Australia, like an akubra hat to protect from the sun and Vegemite, a strong-tasting spread for toast. It’s important to learn about our friends’ special places and things.

Fun with Words

We learned about words that start with “sp,” like special, space, sports, and spent. Sandy’s room is a special space, and she misses playing sports like rugby.

Explore Your Special Place

Think about your special place and the things that make it unique. You can draw them or share them with family and friends. It can be a real place or an imaginary one!

Goodbye for Now!

Thank you for joining us in Circle Time. We hope you had fun learning about Sandy’s special place and thinking about your own. Have a wonderful day, and see you next time!

  • What is your special place, and what makes it unique? Can you describe some of the things you would find there?
  • Have you ever moved to a new place or visited somewhere far away? How did it feel, and what did you miss about your old home?
  • If you could visit any country in the world, where would you go and why? What special things would you like to see or do there?
  1. Create Your Own Special Place: Think about a place that is special to you. It could be your room, a park, or even an imaginary land. Draw a picture of this place and include some of your favorite things, just like Sandy’s room. Share your drawing with a friend or family member and explain why this place is special to you.

  2. Souvenir Show and Tell: Just like Sandy and Sophie shared their souvenirs from Australia, find an item in your home that has a special story or memory. It could be a toy, a photo, or a piece of clothing. Bring it to your next class or family gathering and tell everyone why it’s special to you and where it came from.

  3. Learn About a New Place: Choose a country or place you would like to learn more about. With the help of a parent or teacher, find a book or watch a short video about that place. What are some interesting things you learned? Are there any special animals, foods, or traditions there? Share your findings with your class or family.
