In this lesson, Holly guides participants through the fun and simple process of making homemade Play-Doh while introducing concepts of mixtures and solutions. By combining dry ingredients like flour and salt, and then adding wet ingredients such as water and vegetable oil, learners create a colorful and moldable dough. The activity not only fosters creativity but also reinforces scientific principles in a hands-on manner.
  1. What are the two things we learned about when making Play-Doh?
  2. Can you name one ingredient we used to make the Play-Doh?
  3. What does it mean to knead the dough?

Lighthouse Lab – Make Your Own Play Dough!

Hello everyone! My name is Holly, and today we’re going to have some fun making Play-Doh. It’s really easy, and you might already have everything you need at home. Plus, we’ll learn a bit about mixtures and solutions while we play!

What You Need:

  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1/4 cup of salt
  • 1.5 cups of warm water
  • Some food coloring
  • 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil

Let’s Get Started!

Step 1: Mix the Dry Ingredients

First, take a big bowl and add 1 cup of flour, 1/4 cup of salt, and 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar. Mix them all together really well. Did you know that when we mix these things, we’re making a mixture? A mixture is when you put things together, but they don’t change into something new.

Step 2: Add the Wet Ingredients

Next, add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and 1.5 cups of warm water to the bowl. If you want colorful Play-Doh, add a few drops of food coloring now. When we do this, we’re making a solution! A solution is when something dissolves in water, like the salt and cream of tartar do here.

Step 3: Stir and Form the Dough

Stir everything together until it starts to look like dough. Keep stirring until it forms a big ball.

Step 4: Knead the Dough

Once your Play-Doh is in a ball, take it out and put it on a clean table. Wait a few minutes for it to cool down, then use your hands to knead it. Kneading means squishing and folding the dough to mix everything really well. This helps make your Play-Doh smooth and fun to play with!

And there you have it—your very own homemade Play-Doh! Now you can use it to create anything you can imagine. I hope you had fun learning about mixtures and solutions with me today. See you again soon!

  • What was your favorite part about making Play-Doh, and why do you think it was fun? Can you think of other things you like to make with your hands?
  • Have you ever mixed different things together at home or school? What happened when you did? Did it remind you of making Play-Doh?
  • Why do you think it’s important to mix the ingredients well when making Play-Doh? Can you think of other times when mixing things well is important?
  1. Color Mixing Experiment: Use your homemade Play-Doh to explore color mixing. Start with three primary colors: red, blue, and yellow. Take small pieces of each color and mix them together to see what new colors you can create. Can you make green, purple, or orange? Try mixing different amounts of each color and observe the changes. Discuss with a friend or family member why some colors mix to make new ones.

  2. Texture Hunt: Take your Play-Doh and press it against different surfaces around your home, like a wooden table, a piece of fabric, or a textured wall. Observe the patterns and textures that appear on the Play-Doh. Talk about how the Play-Doh changes when you press it against different surfaces. Can you find a surface that makes a bumpy pattern? How about a smooth one?

  3. Mixture and Solution Detective: Go on a hunt around your kitchen with an adult to find examples of mixtures and solutions. Look at things like a bowl of cereal (mixture) or a glass of lemonade (solution). Discuss what makes each one a mixture or a solution. Can you find other examples? Draw a picture of one mixture and one solution you find.

Hello everyone, Holly here! Today we’re going to learn how to make Play-Doh. It’s super easy, and you probably already have all the ingredients you need at home. Plus, we’re going to learn a little bit about mixtures and solutions.

First, let’s go through the list of ingredients we need to make Play-Doh:
– 1 cup of flour
– 1/4 cup of salt
– 1.5 cups of warm water
– Some food coloring
– 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar
– 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil

Now, let’s get started!

**Step 1:** In a large mixing bowl, add 1 cup of flour, 1/4 cup of salt, and 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar. Let’s mix all of the dry ingredients together thoroughly.

Did you know that when we mix ingredients like flour, salt, and cream of tartar together, we’re creating a mixture? A mixture is when you add two or more substances together, but they don’t change chemically.

**Step 2:** Now let’s add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and 1.5 cups of warm water. If you want to add some color to your Play-Doh, now is also the time to add some dye—just a few drops of red.

Now we’re creating a solution! A solution is when one substance dissolves in another. In this case, the cream of tartar and the salt dissolve in the hot water, creating a solution.

**Step 3:** Let’s stir until a dough begins to form.

**Step 4:** Once the Play-Doh has formed a ball, we can take it out and place it on a clean surface. Make sure you wait a few minutes for it to cool down, and then you can start kneading it with your hands. Kneading the Play-Doh helps mix the ingredients even more thoroughly.

As we knead, we create a new substance with properties that differ from the original ingredients.

And there you have it—homemade Play-Doh that you can use to create anything you can imagine! I hope you had fun learning about mixtures and solutions with me today. See you again soon!
