Today’s Special Book

Today, we have a special book sent to us by our friends Heidi and Jasmine from Australia. Thank you so much! The book is called “What Do They Do with All the Poop at the Zoo?” by Anu, with pictures by Laura Wood. Let’s dive in!

What Happens to Zoo Poop?

Have you ever wondered what happens to all the poop from the animals at the zoo? From tigers to kangaroos, there’s a lot of it! What do you think they do with it?

Some people have funny ideas about it. My brother thinks big trucks take it away to make breakfast cereal. My sister says they use it to make chocolate ice cream. Can you imagine that?

My Uncle Harry even joked that they use it for pizza toppings! And my dad thinks they sell it to make lollipops. Wow, that’s a lot of silly ideas!

What Do You Think?

Do you have any guesses about what they really do with all that poop? Maybe they use it as fertilizer to help plants grow. That’s a good guess!

Our Creative Question

We love hearing from you! Last time, we asked: What is something you do to make someone happy?

Here are some wonderful answers:

  • Lindy, 8, from Utah, gives her mom a back rub. Lucky mom!
  • Samantha wants to give her cousins toys and her grandma soaps. How thoughtful!
  • Vivian, 6, from Texas, draws pictures for her friends to make them smile.
  • Violeta, 9, from Spain, gives her brother a hug and a kiss when he’s upset about homework.

Today’s New Question

Now, here’s a question for you: What do you think they do with all the poop at the zoo? And what’s a question you don’t know the answer to?

A Fun Story: The Grandma Who Chased the Suitcase

Let’s enjoy another story called “The Grandma Who Chased the Suitcase” by Ryan and Craig.

Grandma Paula was a lively grandma who loved to move fast. She was getting ready for a big trip to visit her cousins in Atlanta, Georgia. Even though she was scared of flying, she wanted to get there first to pick her seat.

At the airport, her suitcase started rolling away! Grandma Paula had to chase it all through the airport. It was quite an adventure, but she made it to her flight and was the first one on board!

And that’s the end of our story. Thanks for joining us today! Remember to send us your answers to the creative questions, and we’ll see you next time!

  • What do you think happens to all the poop at the zoo? Can you come up with a funny or creative idea like the ones in the story?
  • Have you ever done something to make someone happy, like the kids in the story? What did you do, and how did it make you feel?
  • If you were Grandma Paula, what would you do if your suitcase started rolling away at the airport? Have you ever had a funny or exciting adventure like that?
  1. Zoo Poop Detective: Next time you visit a zoo or a farm, become a “Zoo Poop Detective”! Look around and see if you can spot any signs or information about what they do with the animal poop. Ask a zookeeper or a guide if they can tell you more about it. Draw a picture of what you learned and share it with your class.

  2. Plant a Seed: Try using compost or fertilizer to plant a small seed at home or in your school garden. Watch how the seed grows over time. Discuss with your friends or family how animal poop can help plants grow and why it’s important for the environment.

  3. Creative Storytelling: Imagine you are an animal at the zoo. Write a short story or draw a comic strip about what happens to your poop after you leave it behind. Does it go on a grand adventure? Does it help grow a beautiful garden? Share your story with your classmates and see what creative ideas they come up with!

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Hey, I’m Craig Toby, and welcome to Story Time with Ryan! Remember, if you like what you see, tune in here or visit our website, writeacray.com. You can watch over 185 read-alouds there, or you can send us a message!

I want to give a huge shout-out to our Aussie fans, Heidi and Jasmine, for sending us today’s book. You guys are awesome! Thanks so much for sending it in. We can’t wait to read it because today’s book is “What Do They Do with All the Poop at the Zoo?” by Anu, illustrated by Laura Wood. Wow, let’s get started!

What do they do with all the poop from all the animals at the zoo? From the tigers to the kangaroos, what do they do with all that poop? Well, that’s an interesting question! What do you think?

I mean, I can see that angle, but just for science, I wonder what they do with it. You’re worried about poop? It’s gross! I’m not worried about it; I’m just curious.

My brother told me the other day that big trucks come and take it away and mix it with all kinds of materials to make children’s breakfast cereal. If this is true, this is a big claim that we need to substantiate with some facts!

You want to go looking for poop? Craig, that’s gross! I’m done eating breakfast cereal!

Well, my sister said that they pick it up at night and mix it all in a big machine to make chocolate ice cream. I wonder what they do with all the poop from all the animals at the zoo—the zebras, the camels, and the elephants too. What do they do with all that poop?

I wonder, don’t you wonder too? Yes, I do! For science!

One time, I was curious about poop, and I found out it was gross. Well, my Uncle Harry put in his two cents and told us they pick up all the animal droppings and that’s what you get in your pizza toppings.

If this is true, what does that mean about how I feel about pizza?

My dad reckons everybody’s wrong. He said that after the people are gone, they scoop it all up in special trolleys and sell it to the company that makes all the children’s lollipops.

It seems like everybody’s ideas revolve around eating the poop from the animals at the zoo!

Can we go back one page? Sure!

Oh, look at Grandma! It looks like she’s on the poop patrol!

What do they do with all the poop from all the animals at the zoo—the penguins, giraffes, and pandas? Do they squish it all in giant cakes and mold it into yummy Easter eggs? Do they stir it all up in a swimming pool and sell it as soup at the local school?

I wonder, don’t you wonder too?

Yes, I do!

So, Ryan, I am that monkey! The monkey gave an answer, but I will be honest—I don’t know what that answer is.

Does anybody know what they actually do? I think we should ask somebody because I genuinely don’t know.

My guess is fertilizer.

Yeah, I guess!

Alright, so that has been “What Do They Do with All the Poop at the Zoo?” by Anu, illustrated by Laura Wood. What a book! What an adventure!

Thanks again to our Aussie fans, Heidi and Jasmine, for sending us that book all the way from Australia!

Now, should we move on to the answers to our creative question from yesterday?

Yes!

So, the question was: What is something that you do for someone to make them happy? We got some really great answers!

Lindy, who is 8 in Utah, said she would give her mom a back rub. Wow, lucky mom!

Samantha said she wants to give her cousins toys, specifically a game for Humman and Barbie dolls for Amina. She also wants to give her grandma soaps.

That’s very thoughtful of Samantha!

Vivian, who is 6 in Katy, Texas, said she likes to draw pictures and give them to her friends at school because it makes them smile.

Violeta, who is 9 from Madrid, Spain, said when her brother doesn’t want to do homework, she gives him a hug and a kiss to make him feel better.

Now we need to give them a question for Monday!

Okay!

What do you think they do with all the poop at the zoo? And what is a question that you don’t know the answer to?

Great!

Now, it’s time for our improvised storytime!

Today’s book is “The Grandma Who Chased the Suitcase” by Ryan and Craig.

Grandma Paula was a feisty grandma who refused to slow down. She always liked to walk ahead of her family. One day, she had a big trip coming up to visit her cousins in Atlanta, Georgia.

She was scared of flying, but she knew that if she got there first, she could pick her seat. So, Grandma Paula went to the airport with her old suitcase.

When she went through security, her suitcase started rolling away!

She had to hurry to catch up with it, and it led her on a wild adventure through the airport.

In the end, Grandma Paula made it to her flight, and her suitcase helped her be the first one on board!

And that was “The Grandma Who Chased the Suitcase” by Ryan and Craig.

Thanks for joining us today! Remember to send us your answers to the creative questions, and we’ll see you next week!
