In this lesson, students learn about living things and their essential needs, including air, nutrients, and water, to survive and thrive. The lesson also highlights the remarkable activities of living things, such as growth, cellular structure, and reproduction. To engage students, the lesson encourages them to mimic the movements of various living creatures, fostering an interactive understanding of the diversity of life around them.
  1. What do living things need to be happy and healthy?
  2. Can you name some things that living things can do?
  3. What living thing can you pretend to be right now?

All About Living Things!

Hey there! Let’s learn about living things. Living things are all around us, and they do some amazing things!

What Do Living Things Need?

Living things need a few important things to stay alive and happy:

  • They need air to breathe.
  • They need nutrients, which are like food for them.
  • They need water to drink.

What Do Living Things Do?

Living things do some cool stuff:

  • They grow bigger and stronger.
  • They have tiny parts called cells.
  • They can make more of themselves. This is called reproducing.

Let’s Move Like Living Things!

Now, let’s pretend to be some living things and move like they do!

Run Like a Cheetah

A cheetah is a living thing. Can you run, run, run fast like a cheetah?

Grow Like a Flower

A flower is a living thing. Can you stretch up tall and grow, grow, grow strong like a flower?

Fly Like an Eagle

An eagle is a living thing. Can you flap your arms and fly, fly, fly so high like an eagle?

Paddle Like a Turtle

A turtle is a living thing. Can you paddle, paddle, paddle and glide like a turtle?

Hop Like a Frog

A frog is a living thing. Can you hop, hop, hop up like a frog?

Slither Like a Snake

A snake is a living thing. Can you slither, slither, slither smooth like a snake?

Look Around!

Every day, look around and see all the living things. They are everywhere, doing amazing things!

  • Can you think of some living things you see every day? What do they do that makes them special or interesting to you?
  • Imagine you could be any living thing for a day. What would you choose to be and why? What fun things would you do?
  • Why do you think it’s important for living things to have air, water, and nutrients? How do you make sure you get these things every day?
  1. Living Things Scavenger Hunt: Go on a scavenger hunt in your backyard or a nearby park with a grown-up. Look for different living things like plants, animals, and insects. Can you find something that breathes air, something that needs water, and something that eats food? Draw a picture of each living thing you find and share what you learned with your friends!

  2. Plant a Seed: Plant a seed in a small pot with soil. Water it regularly and place it in a sunny spot. Watch it grow over the days and weeks. Keep a journal with drawings of how your plant changes. What does your plant need to grow? How does it change as it gets bigger?

  3. Animal Movements Game: With your friends or family, play a game where you take turns pretending to be different animals. Can you move like a cheetah, a turtle, or a frog? Think about how each animal moves and what makes it special. Why do you think these animals move the way they do?
