In the lesson “Here Come the Bears!”, the adventurous bears embark on a quest to find books while engaging in imaginative play. They explore different roles, such as trees and birds, and overcome challenges together, ultimately discovering the joy of storytelling and music. The bears celebrate their creativity by forming a book band, dancing, and sharing stories, highlighting the importance of friendship and imagination in their adventures.
  1. What do the bears like to do on their adventure?
  2. How do the bears pretend to be different animals?
  3. What makes the bears’ music special and fun?

Here Come the Bears!

Guess what? The book-hungry bears are on an adventure! They are looking for books to share. Could the books be here? Could they be there? Let’s find out!

Let’s Pretend!

The bears are having so much fun! Melody wants to be a tree. But wait, trees don’t climb hills! What should they do? How about being birds? Birds can fly up the hill! Let’s pretend to be birds and fly high!

Climbing the Hill

Oh no, Melody’s wings are tired! But don’t worry, they have a fun idea. They can “boom” their way to the top! Just say “boom” really loud and run up the hill. Boom, boom, boom!

The Queen of the Forest

Melody is now the queen of the forest, sitting on her throne. But queens don’t climb hills, do they? Maybe they can be carried up! Crystal helps Melody, and they continue their adventure.

Story Time!

Look, they found a book! It’s time for a story. Everyone gets close and comfy. The story is about Raju, a little elephant, and his mommy. They go on a big adventure, just like the bears!

Raju’s Adventure

Raju and his mommy walk through the forest. They meet a snake and a tiger, but Raju’s mommy is brave and scares them away. They climb a mountain, and Raju sees the whole world from the top. It’s beautiful!

Back to the Hill

The bears want to reach the top of the hill too. They pretend to be big, strong elephants and march to the top. Hooray, they made it! They can see the whole world!

Making Music

Now, the bears hear a bird singing. Melody and her friends decide to make music too! They become a book band with special instruments. Melody uses her voice, just like a songbird. Together, they play beautiful music!

Another Story!

The music works! A book comes to them, and it’s story time again. This story is about dancing and having fun. The kids in the story dance to the music, and so do the bears!

Let’s Dance!

The bears clap, tap, and dance with joy. Everyone has their own special dance moves, just like their special instruments. Melody realizes her voice is her instrument, and she sings happily.

The Amazing Book Band

The bears’ music makes the books happy. They keep playing and dancing because they are an amazing book band. What a fun adventure with stories, music, and friends!

  • What is your favorite pretend game to play, and why do you like it? Can you think of a new pretend game you could play with your friends?
  • If you could be any animal, like the bears pretending to be birds or elephants, which animal would you choose and what adventure would you go on?
  • Melody and her friends made music with their voices and instruments. What kind of music do you like to make or listen to, and how does it make you feel?
  1. Animal Adventure Walk: Go on a walk outside and pretend to be different animals, just like the bears in the story. Can you flap your arms like a bird or stomp like an elephant? What other animals can you pretend to be? Talk about what each animal might see or hear on their adventure.

  2. Make Your Own Music: Create your own “book band” using everyday items. Use pots, pans, or empty containers as drums, and wooden spoons as drumsticks. Can you make a rhythm like the bears? Try singing along with your music, just like Melody. What songs can you create together?

  3. Story Time Imagination: After reading a story, draw a picture of your favorite part. What did you like most about the story? Can you imagine what happens next in the adventure? Share your drawing and story ideas with a friend or family member.

Here come the bears! The book-hungry bears are looking for books to share. Could they be here? Could they be there?

[Music]

What a view! So many trees! I want to be a tree.

[Music]

Melody, what are you doing? I’m a tree, a great big tree. That’s nice, but we want to go to the top and find a book. Sorry, but trees don’t climb hills. What do we do?

Hey, Melody, be a bird! Then you could fly up the hill. Ooh, that’s fun! Let’s be birds!

[Music]

Are we almost there? Almost, right, Melody? Melody, come on, why did you stop? My wings are tired from all that flying. I have a great idea! We can “boom” our way to the top. It’ll be fun!

How do we do that? You say really loud “boom” while you run as fast as you can up the hill. Come on, everyone! Boom, boom, boom!

[Music]

Hello, trees! Hello, river!

Melody, what are you doing? I’m the queen of the forest, and this is my throne. I have to watch over everything.

But we’re climbing the hill! Maybe the queen of the forest would like to climb the hill. The queen of the forest does not climb up hills; she sits and watches.

Can queens be carried up hills? Yes, forest queens can be carried up!

Why, thank you, Crystal!

[Music]

Isn’t the view beautiful? I’ll look at it later, Melody. Right now, I’m too busy carrying you.

But Crystal, you’re missing the best part! Look, a book!

That’s good; the queen of the forest was getting heavy. Thanks for carrying me!

Yes, story time! Yay! Is everyone close and comfy? Close and comfy! Let the story begin.

“Woo Soon” by Timothy Napan, illustrated by Patrick Benson. Wow, look at the elephants! Maybe this story is about a mommy elephant and her tender baby.

It looks like very early one morning, Raju and his mommy set out on a great adventure. They walked for a long time.

“When can we go home again?” asked Raju.

“Soon,” said his mommy.

Raju looks like he doesn’t want to go on an adventure; he’s so far behind his mommy, just like you were, Melody, when we were climbing the hill.

Oh yeah!

[Music]

They came to the forest where the snake sleeps. “We must be very quiet,” said Raju’s mommy. But the snake heard them anyway and came slithering.

I don’t see the snake; there it is! And look, Raju is chasing a butterfly. Maybe Raju doesn’t know the snake is there.

[Music]

Raju’s mommy blew her trunk so hard it made the trees shake, and the snake went sliding off into the shadows.

Wow, they blew the snake away! I guess elephants can take care of themselves.

“When can we go home again?” asked Raju.

“Soon,” said his mommy.

Oh no, they came to the tall grass where the tiger prowled. “We must be very quiet,” said Raju’s mommy. But the tiger heard them anyway and came roaring.

Oh no! Raju’s mommy reared up so high she was as tall as a giant, and the tiger went running off into the tall grass.

If I saw an elephant like that, I’d run really fast!

And if I were that elephant, I’d make lots of noise!

[Music]

That would scare me away for sure!

“When can we go home again?” asked Raju.

“Soon,” said his mommy. Raju looks really tired. I’m sure his mommy will help him keep going, just like you helped me keep going up this hill.

Yeah!

Then they came to the mountain. “We’re going to climb it,” said Raju’s mommy. “Hold on tight to my tail.”

His mommy’s helping him up the hill, just like when Crystal carried you, Melody. That was fun! Thanks again, Crystal!

At last, they reached the top of the mountain. Raju could see all his world spread out before him.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” said Raju’s mommy.

“Yes,” said Raju.

Wow, so nice!

It is beautiful!

“When can we go home again?” asked Raju.

His mommy smiled and stroked his head with her trunk. “Now,” she said. “That was a great adventure, and now it’s time to go home.”

And they walked all the way back down the mountain, past the tiger in the tall grass, past the snake in the forest.

I see the tiger! I can’t find the snake.

It’s in those trees!

Did you enjoy our great adventure? asked Raju’s mommy. Raju was tired, and his feet hurt, and he’d never been up so late in his life before.

“When can we do it all again?” Raju said.

“Soon,” said his mommy.

Wow, what a nice story! Thank you for sharing your story!

Great story! Bye!

Thank you! Raju and his mommy had a great adventure with lots of things to say, and we had a great adventure climbing this hill. The way down will be much easier, but we never made it to the top of the hill.

We didn’t need to; we found a book before we got to the top.

Oh, but we have to go to the top! I think there’s a big surprise up there.

There is! Hey, I know! We can pretend to be big, strong, loud elephants like in the book and march to the top of the hill!

I want to be big like an elephant!

And I want to be strong like an elephant!

And I want to be loud like an elephant!

And I want you all to see the surprise!

Come on!

[Music]

We made it!

[Applause]

Yay! We can see the whole world!

Thanks, Melody! You helped me just like Raju’s mommy helped him, and it was fun too! I got to be a bird, a tree, and the queen of the forest!

But the last one at the bottom of the hill is…

The last one at the bottom of the hill! Look out!

[Music]

Books! Looking for books to share! Could they be here? Could they be there?

Looking for books to share!

[Music]

What’s up, Melody? Did you see a book?

Listen! I can hear something! It’s a bird with a pretty song!

A songbird! Nice tweeting!

Tweet, tweet, tweet!

Nice tweeting, Boomer, but you scared the bird away!

Come on, everybody! Let’s keep looking for books!

Listen! Is it a book bear?

It’s a woodpecker! I like the sound you make, woodpecker!

Wow, you’re making music!

I know! Maybe we can make a band! We can make music together so the books can find us!

Wow, that’s a great idea! We’ll be a book band with really special instruments!

Boom! Yes! And I can play my stick!

Um, what special book band instrument is that?

Look and listen! This sound is like the pages of a book!

Amazing! Boomer, you and Scout need to find some special book band instruments too!

Oh, so do I! Come on!

[Music]

I’ve got it! I found my special book band instrument!

You sound just like books when they flap around!

That’s right, Scout! That’s the sound I was trying to make! Good job, Boomer!

Let’s try our instruments together!

Good idea, Crystal!

Woohoo! Go book band!

Come on, Scout! I really want to find an instrument to play with them!

Me too! Let’s go!

I have to find something!

Gotcha! Look! I found an instrument for the band! A piece of grass!

How do you…?

I’m going to blow on this grass like this!

That sounds like laughing! That’s amazing!

See? I’m a laughing instrument because listening to stories makes me happy!

Wow! You’re all such a great book band with your instruments! But what can I play?

I don’t know what!

Look! The book band is working! Come on, everybody! Play as loud as you can!

It looks like they don’t hear us!

Louder, Melody! Help us!

Oh, books! Can’t you hear a book bear over here? Share your story with us!

Oh, we’re playing this for you! Please fly over here!

It worked!

Yay! Woohoo! Yay! Would you like to share a story with us?

Yes! Storytime! Is everyone close and comfy?

Close and comfy! Let the story begin!

“Woo Amazing Me Dance” by Carol Thompson. That boy looks like he’s having a lot of fun! Dancing is the most fun ever!

But what are those things?

They’re musical notes! Yes, the boy must be dancing to music!

Oh cool! We love to dance!

You were right, Melody! The music is coming from there!

And bop to the beat! Fun! A beat! Just like this!

And I can bop to the beat! Go, go, go! Yay!

[Laughter]

Yay! Hands go clap, feet go tap! They look like they’re having so much fun!

Look! I can clap and tap too!

You’ve got great dance moves, Boomer!

Boogie, wiggle! Every kid has a different way of dancing, just like we have different ways of playing music with our book band instruments!

But I still need an instrument!

We can help you find one after the story, Melody! Yay!

I can’t wait! Move and groove! Move and groove! Come on, move!

[Music]

I’m all grooved out! Let’s see what other moves the kids have!

Simmy shake!

Shake! Do a monster move!

I can be a monster too!

We’re bumping, bopping, we’re stop, stop, stopping!

We’re amazing!

They are amazing!

Yeah! I learned some great new dance moves and grooves!

And the bump! Each kid had a different move, just like we have different instruments in our book band!

Thank you! Bye, book! Bye! Great story!

Come on, book band! Let’s make some more music!

But I don’t have an instrument to play!

Remember? But you do!

I do? You use your voice to get the books to hear us, right?

That’s right! The books came when you sing!

Yeah, but that’s your instrument! Your beautiful singing voice, like the songbird!

Oh yeah! I have my book band instrument after all!

Come on, book band! Let’s play!

Book, thank you! You shared your story, and we loved it!

We loved it!

[Music]

Look, everyone! The books like our music!

Wow! Keep playing! We can make music because we are an amazing book band!
